i just came into ownership of a Pioneer PL-730 that my parents had in a closet for the last 20 years. After plugging it in to run it through the paces and see what is working and what is not, I have found 2 specific issues:
1) when there is power to the turntable the platter immediately starts spinning and will not turn off when pushing the start/stop button. I have had to resort to plugging it into a switched surge protector to control the platter.
2) the automatic tonearm functions are wonky. When the turntable is in repeat it sends the tonearm to the record area. When I hit the start/stop button the tonearm returns to the resting position but then goes back out to the record area. When the turntable is not in repeat it will not send the tonearm to the record area, but if I manually put the tonearm on the record are and push the start/stop button it will return the tonearm to the resting position.
My inclination is that after sitting for 20 years in a closet the grease and lubricants inside the turntable have seized causing mechanical parts to stick. Does anyone have other thoughts?
Additionally, manuals or service information for the PL-730 are scarce at best. Does anyone have an idea of how to get inside the thing to be able to clear out the old grease and lube and put some new in?
