Pioneer PL-9 VTA Adjustment

Hey all,

I recently acquired a PL-9, one of my “grail” tables. After fixing the auto mechanism it’s running quite well and I’m considering swapping out the Technics in my main system. I’d like to move the Denon cart over as well but it’s VTA sensitive, and I haven’t been able to find adjustment instructions as the manual seems to have been lost to time. Any tips would be much appreciated!

I had a PL5, And there wasn’t adjustment for VTA. I had to experiment with different mat thickness. I did finally work it out
Hope this helps

Congrats on snagging that PL-9. Simply wonderful, if under-appreciated, turntable. The arm height adjustment is located on the right hand side of the turret (viewed from the front of the turntable). It requires a small flat-blade screwdriver. If you'll send an email to beej1123j-at-aol.com I'll send you a .pdf of the PL9 owners manual.

beej, don't leave that email address up. Web bots scrape sites for such things. You can defeat that by replacing the @ with 'at'.

Done, definitely appreciate it! I can pretty much open the 7 and 8 with my eyes closed thanks to your guide. Didn’t realize how different the 9 is until I cracked it open.

Entirely different including the separate motorized tonearm assembly.

That one was fun to diagnose. Replaced the belt and tried some lubrication but in the end the idler wheel wasn’t causing enough friction on the plate. Cleaned both and applied some rubber protectant to the wheel and it finally worked.

beej, I just acquired a PL9 as well. I have had my beloved PL7 for 45 years now. I wanted the 9 then, but got what I could afford back then. I sent you an email about the PL9 manual. I would sincerely appreciate it if you would email me the PDF also. Thank you!

Happy to do so. Traveling at the moment but will get both to you once I get home.
