Pioneer PL-A35 score today

Found one in nice looking condition in a thrift store today for cheap. Had the cover with in really nice condition, and cosmetically about an 8 out of 10 overall for the entire TT. Belt was broken so I will have to replace that, and the anti-skating device weight and wire are missing. Still I can't complain for tweve bucks. It also has a Shure M93 cartridge. Anyone have experience with this TT? Is it a keeper or something to pass along?

A keeper without a doubt. The PLA 35 is a nice TT, fully automatic and very reliable.
The only thing you have to look for is the motor, they tend to slow down with age. At the time that TT was also offered with a corded remote control, very neat machine.
Get a new belt and run it, if the speed hold up you got yourself a nice TT

My recently acquired Pl-A35 has a new belt and a new AT 95HE cartridge on it for now.
This is a keeper for sure!!!
 
I'd keep it until you find something you think is better.

The PL-A45D I use is not the "duck's guts" but its pretty good, even with a Pioneer cart. My records are my sound quality bottle neck - mostly thrift shop scores.
I think you could do a lot worse for more money.

I found mine to be a bit slow at first, but some lubrication and some use and it has come good. The seller said it had not been used for years. I think, like an old cassette deck, the lube dries out over time.

Thanks for the info folks I actually do have something better, but this was such nice looking find that I could not bear to pass it up. Now I have like five tables! :banana: Too many! I will probably check this one out to ensure it is working, then give it as a Christmas present. Anyone where where I can find the anti-skating device wire and weight, or how to recreate one? It is missing unfortunately.

The anti-skating weight is 1.27 grams.
The length of the nylon line with the end lope is 7 cm long.
There is at least one present day turntable manufacturer that uses a small weight that appears to be similar.
Theirs is black in colour not chrome.

Thanks for the info. Do you know where to find this weight? Also, 7mm seems awfully short for the length of this line. Are you sure about that length? See pic where I circled the line in red.

A split shot would make a good functional substitute.
There are new bias weight from present day turntable manufacturer, but can't recall their brand name.
It is 7 cm, sorry for the typo!!!

I have a PL A35D that's in near mint condition...
Got the box,manual, etc, but no remote, boy would I love to find one

New turntable that uses the nylon line with weight..Music Hall Turntable with the Project arms...MMF 7 MMF 9 MMF 2.1 etc. Check it out at:

You can probably find or get the anti skating string and weight(s) from their parts support or Project. I had the MMF 7.1 and gave it to my dad , he loves it. I'll stick with my Technics SL 1210 M5G with KAB upgrades.

I may just head over to a sport and tackle store and pick up some fishing line and split shot fishing weights and just experiment with what works. :thmbsp:
 
I'm not sure about your Pioneer, but the Music Hall table compensate for weight adjustments by moving the loop end of the string up and down a shaft. Your table may function in a similar fashion if it has several notches on the hanging shaft to hang the weight from.

After looking in the manual, I found there were actually two weights; an aluminum one for tracking under two grams, and a brass one for tracking over 2 grams.
 
malanga's post #7 has an illustration of the Pioneer set up.
The cartridge in use is the AT 95HE. The tracking is et for 1.86 gram at the moment, according to the digital scale.
The bias is set near the appropriate notch on the horizontal scale bar.

As for fishing line, try 2 pound test Berkley Vanish (Fluorocarbon).
Virtually Invisible, abrasion should not be a factor in this case! :D
