Pioneer PL-L1000 Issue

I have a Pioneer PL-L1000 that I bought from someone locally around a year ago (replaced the tonearm belt after I got it) and it has been working perfectly ever since. I was playing a record a couple days ago and at the end of the album the arm didn't lift and return to rest but stayed spinning at the end of the record.

I figured it just wasn't detecting the end of the album so pressed the stop button and suddenly the motor began making a loud noise. I had to turn the power off because the tonearm wouldn't respond to the stop button or jog wheel. I moved the arm down the rails manually when the power was off but as soon as I turned it back on the loud motor noise instantly began and the tonearm immediately began moving quickly/jerking back and forth on the rails. The only way to stop the arm from moving was to lock it down or to turn the power off--the auto start/stop/jog wheel don't work. The motor will not stop unless the power is off.

When I first got the table, I spent a long time setting it up to make sure it was level and have used it fairly frequently without ever having a problem. I've read through multiple forums but haven't found anything describing a similar issue. Wanted to see if anyone had an idea about what might have suddenly caused this.

Which motor is making a noise? You really need the service manual before you do anything with this unit. It's available for free on hifimanuals.com and is very detailed.

If it's the lift motor, it's probably something to do with the lift motor limit switch not activating due first to a mechanical fault, starting with a belt fault, then motor mounting, then lift gear problem, then switch failure.
