Pioneer PL7 setup

Hi,

I finally bought a pl-7 off ebay and it arrived in excellent shape and all functions work good. I went ahead and printed off a manual for it. The manual shows how to make adjustments, but...

1) I don't know what the proper tracking force is for the Audio Technica cartridge it has and can't hardly see under it. So far I have balanced the tone arm with the tracking weight set to 0, then moved the tracking force to 1.5 which seems to work and sound good.

2) The manual says the anti-skating will correspond to be the same as the tracking force. Is this the general rule on anti-skate setting?

thanks for any help.

Alrighty,

1) From the pictures, the cartridge looks like an AT-110E, and it has a tracking force between 1-2g. I would put it somewhere between 1.25-1.5g.

2) Yes, you will correspond with the same tracking force as to the anti-skate. So 1.5g of VTF = 1.5 anti-skate.

Does this help?

It does, thank you much.

sorry for the double post, but would you guys recommend a different cartridge or any other simple upgrades. Just curious... currently i think it sounds pretty dang good.

different cartridges-
the motor is well shielded on these turntables, so Grado carts don't hum. The prestige series starts at about $60 for the Black.

Ortofon 2M series- about $100 for the Red, goes up from there.

Shure M97Xe- about $80-90 online or less.

Higher end Audio-Technica carts such as the AT440MLa

Vintage Pickering/Stanton are all good.

Vintage ADC XLM/QLM series carts.

Because the arm is very low mass, I'd not recommend the Denon DL110. It's not a very good compliance match.

At that price range and new? My choice would be the Audio-Technica AT95E. Cheap, tracks nice, sounds decent and stylus can be upgraded.

I would avoid the AT95e for these arms. That's a medium compliance cart and you're really better off with the higher compliance carts. It's not that the AT95e will sound bad, it just isn't the best match for this arm. Any of the carts bigdaddy mentioned will match well.
