Pioneer RG-2 RG-9

Anyone know anything about the Pioneer "processor" RG-2 and/or RG-9? I know where there's both and was wondering if it'd be worth adding to my Pioneer collection (SX-950, Spec 1, Spec 4 and soon to be Spec 2). I think they're priced around 25/35 dollars ea.

I have no idea about the unit's ability to improve the sound coming out of your speakers, but i'm sure you'll agree that Pioneer made some nice looking stuff

I have a RG-1 and a RG-2. They operate much like a dbx expander. IMHO they make a nice improvement in many program sources. I use one in my "Garage System" with a SX-737 and a pair of CS-R500s.

If you're a vintage Pioneer guy or have a vintage Pioneer system, they make a nice addition.

I hve the rg2. I sold one once and was sorry. I searched out and found another. The rg2 makes vinyl and especially cassettes sound much better on the older analog systems. I find it is not so good with cd's.

I would definately add it to your system. I have never tried the dbx, I have heard they are better, buit I don't know.

Plus the extra knobs and cool lights area nice benefit too.

i have the rg-1 and agree it can improve on cassettes and vinyl. love the look of the dual meters on those too :thmbsp:

so i say get yourself one of them

I have an RG-2 coupled with my SA-708 & CT-F850 and it makes a significant difference when playing back cassettes - during which time it's always switched on.

And like others, i'm a sucker for the blue meters :)

I have an RG9 that came as part of a package deal. Think it sat in a barn for 20 years, and I have had it in the basement for a couple more: is there anything I should do to refurbish it before playing?

I'll buy 1 if not both.
Thanks.
The guy at the (hardcore) pawn said that's what they were for but I kinda wanted it verified before I offered him cash. One looks like it "sat in a barn for 20 years". I think I'll go with the other one. I agree, I was drawn towards the meters not even knowing what they were.

These are great too, if you can find one. It's an EX-9000, came in silver and black:music:

So is this just a range expander? Or does it also decrease noise level (hiss) like a DBX or a Phase Linear 1000?

Charles

The sales pitch was it restored dynamics often lost in the recording process.

Not sure if they really do or not, but they look cool in a spec system. I use my RG-2 occasionally, more than the SR-303 which just makes things sound like your at a stadium.

You'll need some JA-R104 rack mount ears if you want to rack mount it.

Decompresses music: makes the loud sounds louder and the soft sounds softer. OK, it is a dynamic range expander.
Too much expansion or compression :dunno:
