Pioneer RT-71 won't rewind and left spindle wont keep slack.

Just bought a pioneer RT71 and it plays however the left spindle has trouble keeping slack and it will not rewind. Would greatly appreciate advice on what could be the problem, I think it just needs a belt replacement but im no expert. Also if anyone knows how to take the face plate off of this machine I'd appreciate any insite on that aswell.

I have a rt71 that had some transport problems when I got it so maybe I can be of some help. Hi Fi Engine does not list the rt71 but the QT 6100 is similar. If you download the reel base replacement kit it shows many good diagrams of the hub and brake mechanism. The front panel is removed by removing the knobs for the play, pause and speed selection, two screws behind the tape head cover and two screws behind the reels. Only remove the upper left screw on the left side and the upper right screw on the right. There is a small plastic wheel that contacts the hub to provide back tension. It should brake the hub in one direction but no resistance in the other. It might need new belts but it probably needs a cleaning and relubing. There is a place called Vintage-Electronics.Net that lists a belt kit for the rt71. Also found it on Amazon but I think it is the same seller. Good luck with your new deck, I think it's a fairly good machine with recording and auto reverse in both directions.
 
Thankyou! Ill try relubing and cleaning that mechanism! Any brand of lube you'd recommend? And do i need to remove the panel with the power button and the auto reverse when i take the face plate off or does that stay on the faceplate?
 
There is also two screws that hold the hinged head cover on, plus the two that go through the panel. Power button and reversing buttons will stay on the deck. With the panel off you will be able to see the belts and what shape they are in. You could use rubber bands to hold the tape shut off switches up and then try the different transport functions.
