Pioneer SA-8100 Restoration

I recently acquired a Pioneer SA-8100 and the matching TX-8100 tuner. They're in near mint condition, and as far as I'm aware never serviced. I'm planning on doing a complete restoration on both the amp and tuner, starting with the amp. A few questions:

While the amp does work (aside from the extremely dirty switches and pots), it seems, for some unknown reason, to be randomly going into protection mode. There's no speakers connected; only headphones, and the speakers are turned off. Anything that could be causing this?
Has anyone ever successfully restored a sa-8100? what's the general opinion of this amp?
Anything else I should know?
any tips for a relative noobe are appreciated!

Yes. Many people have successfully restored 8100 amps and the others in that line. I would start with a good internal cleaning of all pots and switches and exercise them well, numerous times. To see if you can get it working reliably first. It's always MUCH preferred to get the unit working well, PRIOR to attempting any recap or other restoration on a unit such as this. Good luck, as that is a nice little amp.
