Pioneer SA 8100 seller says this

I asked seller if any work has been carried out he said this -

'The power amp section has had a few capacitors and 2 new signal transistors changed. Bias set and tested'

Is this going to make this a better purchase for me or should I wait for another Pioneer SA 8100?

Chances of finding any SA8100 NOT worked on are very remote and waiting for it, makes the chance only worse. You are buying a 40+ years old unit.

Agreed that almost all, if not ALL units from 40 years ago have had, or need some king of service. If you buy a unit that old that hasn't been serviced, chances are you will need to have it serviced. Replacement of a few caps and a few signal transistors is not a big deal, and I would think this would be a fine unit to pick up if the price is right

Presumably, the seller replaced the two 2SC1451 transistors on the Power Amp Unit which is a good thing since they are unreliable and have been know to take out other components when they fail. The seller would have been wise to have also replaced the four 2SA726 transistors at the same time which are know to go noisy.

Les.

And keep in mind you'll have to invest some $$ in another service, as said, you are buying an old unit, they need a refurbish, and if not done 100%, you'll need to fix different fails time to time, sooner or later. They are long passed the manufacturer's estimated lifetime.

How much will a service cost? I've never had audio service.

I can't tell, I live in a different country, but down here, if the amplifier is not an expensive one, one average repair can be 50% to 100% or even more than the price of the unit. A full overhaul will be much more.

In expensive units the % is lower.

A local tech will give you better advice.

I'm not telling you don't buy it, all this forum is mostly about old gear, but keep in mind that old amps use to fail and they need maintenance time to time, or a full overhaul as some people do. I bought my amp brand new in 1989, I replaced all the capacitors in 2010, no major problems, I use it everyday.

G7 - edit your profile to include your location, it may make a difference.
Place I went to charged $100 to look at it. People drop stuff off and don't come back. They get money up front and put it against your bill.
I would budget $100-200 for repairs. However it may work great and never have a problem.
If you are into vintage it is good to have backups. Good news is more stuff is more fun.
