Pioneer SA 8100 Sounds of Silence Problem

I own a Pioneer SA 8100 amplifier that is giving me fits.:tears: Originally I had a problem with it when the protection light would come on after a couple of minutes. I had it looked over by a technician and that problem was fixed. Now however, after a couple of minutes (quite randomly) the sound will go out for two or three seconds and then back on. It occurs whether using the phono or tuner. The protection light does not come on, just the short period of no sound. After once or twice of the silence it stays on and plays just fine. Leads me to believe it has something to due while warming up. Any thoughts on what this could be?

Does the protect light come on when powered up, then go off a few seconds later? Just seeing if the light works.

Do you hear a "click" when the audio cuts out? When it returns?

Check all fuses to make sure they are tight.

Odd to lose both channels unless it's the protect kicking in, or a power issue, IMO.

You could try running the preamp out to another amp and see if still does it.
That would tell if it's the amp or preamp section.

The protect light does not come on when powered up...no click when audio cuts out or returns...fuses are tight.
 
The protect light should come on on power up, then shut off when the relay engages.

This is the case with the SA-7100 any how.

Do you hear the relay click a few seconds after power up?

I do hear the relay click a few seconds after power up, but no light. The protect light worked before I took it to the technician.
 
Take it back, or find another technician.

That is poor service. They should stand behind their work.

There are a lot of controls (switches and pots, and the protection relay) to be cleaned in an 8100.

loosing both channels at the same time IS odd, but without the lamp to tattle on the relay, it can be hard to tell why.

The relay could even be partially or quietly releasing due to weak drive current on the coil, which eventually recovers as the unit warms up. In that case the relay driver transistor would be the first suspect.
