Pioneer SA-9500 Mk1

Last year I bought a Pioneer Sa-9500 for $350. When it works, it sounds pretty good and blows any modern amp I have used out of the water. It is experiencing the issue these amps seem to have (power protection grid failure), and I wanted to know if it was worth having it fixed or if I should look around for something else and sell the Pioneer. A friend of mine gave me some JBL L-100s, so I am currently using those for speakers. Thoughts?

The SA-9500 has a good number of troublesome transistors. The regulated power supply and protection board often needs to be rebuilt as well. You may be able to get away with a repair to address a specific fault but a restoration is generally the way to go to ensure long term reliability. Once restored, these are good performing integrated amps.

If the amp works sometimes, the solution could be as simple as a power supply voltage adjustment or a dying transistor on the protection board. If you have basic skills and tools, you may be able to identify the source of the trouble yourself.

I think the output devices on these are pretty special too - if these are working OK however that will be a big bonus

Thanks guys! I’ll probably take it in and see what they say. There is a place in Chicago that does great work, and they warranty it afterwards.
