Hello friends,
Recently I found this beauty on a local second hand electronics, the state was "not working" and after some talking with the owner, he was sick of trying to make it works, he gave it to me for around 30 USD. I did the research before and knew this was probably a good piece, some places says it is a high-end model, so I accepted the deal.
The unit was not reading any CD (I mainly wanted to play CDs, not so interested on recording, at least not for now). After some research I found here by @dr-tinear that there was a supercapacitor able to cause a lot of trouble. So I proceed to check this and removed as they suggested, but the problem was not solved.
So I went to read the service manual and found under the adjustment session one adjustment that was pointing directly to my difficulties: "Play does not start, track search impossible, track are skipped" It was Playback power adjustment. Being a little anxious i decided to give it a try and move the trimmer for the adjustment a little to see if some change was noticeable and well... immediately the unit started to read and play the CDs!
After that I become more serious about the adjustment, so I take the voltmeter and set the power as manual says it should be 208mv, but this setting returned the unit to its original (not reading cds state). So I turned again the trimmer until the cds play and reproduce without any difficulties which was around 316mv.
On this power the unit is able to read any cd, from very scratched cds to recorded CD-Rs and so far I am very happy with my new CD Player. Still I did not try to record, but so far I guess the record power of the laser should be set a little higher too.
Reading here I learned that this is a usual setting on these units, thanks to the time and the use, led start to lose its power or might be due to dust or dirt inside the lens, something impossible to clean, in this way an increase in the power could make it work again, at the expense of the duration of the led. My assumption here is that to change the laser pickup will be the best practice to follow.
What you think about it guys? Do you think this increase in the power of the led could lead to a damage soon? Or working like this could last another 26 years? (this model was release on 1995). Also any ideas of where to look for the laser pickup unit will be great. The part number PEA1326.
Well guys, thank you for your time and reading, so far I am very happy with this CD player, it sounds a bit better than my other CD player, a Denon DN-650F and that my USB DAC. My impression, but is hard to notice, is that it is more detailed and full in the highs, so I have a better feeling of space and detail. Unfortunately the remote control was missing and now that I am enjoying this CD player this much I started to wish for it.
