Pioneer Speakers

Hi, I been searching for a Pioneer HPM-100 or HPM-150 or HPM-900 speakers. HPM-150 is I am most interest in.

There are several on the ebay. One of the person selling HPM-900 but have following in description:

>>> Both woofers have been refoamed because of dry rot. One woofer has been reconed. These have been put in new playing condition and the sound is incredible. These speakers have a polymer graphite woofer and they have been refoamed. All the drivers are original and working. <<<

Need some help here. As per seller "All the drivers are original and working" what are drivers? I know in computer term it is a piece of software which enable communication between hardware and operating system.

Now he has done following: refoamed and reconed. Will the speakers still able to produce same sound quality as original after all these changes?

If you looking/shopping for vintage speakers will you buy this pair?

Thanks

In a Speaker System the 'driver' is the individual part, i.e. the woofer, mid-range or tweeter, that takes the electrical signal and converts it to sound by moving (driving) the air. The cabinet, stuffing, crossover, and grill are all part of the Speaker System, and do affect the sound. A Speaker System with one driver has a full range driver, more complex Systems have multiple drivers. Maybe TMI . :blah:

Will they produce the same sound quality as the original? Maybe, and hopefully, but probably better than the damaged original equipment. It depends on the quality of the chosen replacement parts and the skill of the repairer. FWIW, a refoam is a very common repair, and is usually pretty easy to do with care.

"All the drivers are original and working." That statement is open to interpretation, a 'recone' could be just a replacement of the tapered cone, or a rebuild with a new cone, new coil former and coil, spider, and dust cover. A purist would say any replacement parts makes it 'non-original' unless it was rebuilt by the OEM with OEM parts. Others might call it original if the metal frame and magnet are the only parts that are still the same. YMMV. Yeah, I know, TMI again

Only your ears will know. :dunno:

I have a set of HPM 1100 I bought new in Japan. after 25 or so years, and probably as many moves, the PG drivers got damaged. They still "worked", just not very well. I finally decided to get them fixed, and found an outfit in Florida, The Speaker Exchange. They reconed them, and that included new voice coils. They sound wonderful, so yes, it is possible for them to sound nice. if the work is quality, and done correctly.

Very nice explanation. Thanks for your input. Very helpful

If you buy speakers on line, make sure the seller knows how to properly pack and ship them. Best is to pick them up in person if at all possible. I found a pair of HPM 1500's within an hour of me a few years back. Great find.
