Pioneer Spec 2 Protection Mode

I was listening to a Spec 2 for around 5 to 10 minutes with my Yamaha CX-600/U pre-amp hooked up and all the sudden it pops and goes into protection mode with the Right meter almost on 500 when turned on at any given time, I felt of the Right channel speaker wire and it was kind of hot. I only had 1 speaker hooked up at the time. I checked the Left channel and it worked good before the pop and going into protection mode, so was checking the Right channel and that's when it popped and went into protection mode. The matching Spec 1 also has a Right channel issue where it plays, but it's all high output with very little bass, but the Left channel plays good. I am thinking the Spec 2 had an issue long before I got it and it caused the Spec 1 Right channel to mess up. Any help will be appreciated.

So when you say "pops" - did it make a sound thru the speakers, or are you describing the sound of the relay clicking?

Did you accidentally let any speakers short out when you were connecting/testing the speakers?

SPEC 2 one meter up in protect is the common failure symptom. It’s been a long time since I first read about that. I think it’s to do with a relay that is no longer available and there is a “dead bug” work around.

Time for a repair.
You’ll need a good vintage Pioneer tech.
There are some folks here with the experience.

I already have most replacement parts to rebuild the spec 1 and spec 2. I have caps, diodes, relays and transistors for both units. I am just waiting on my electric desoldering iron pump, a circuit board holder and some back ordered parts from mouser that should be here Tuesday.

Try searching AK on SPEC 2.
There is/was a thread about them and that meter issue.

I read it many years ago.
I rebuilt a SPEC 2 three years ago.
Time flies.
