Tapping on the relay cover will usually bring the problem to the surface. It is best to use a pair of headphones, and have the volume low. Tap the top of the relay clear cover (the one mounted on the circuit board left front, not the one mounted to the chassis in the middle), and it the volume cuts in and out on the taps, the relay is dirty. I usually use a pencil or something non metalic, although as long as you are careful, you can use the back of a screwdriver as well.

Relays are a very common failure. You could open the receiver, play music at a low level, and wiggle the relay. If the sound in one or both channels comes and goes, it needs to be replaced.

Ok, my next question is would a bad speaker relay affect the sound through headphones as well?

On the SX-1050 I believe it does.

Edit: Just checked the schematic. Yes, there is one relay for both speakers and headphones.

That said, the speaker selector switches could be dirty.

Yes.

If the sound in the headphones is good in both channels, then the speaker selector switches could be dirty.

The relay is before the speaker switches and headphone jack.
