Out of curiosity I called the guy, he said one side is going into protection after using it for a few minutes.
If he means that one side shuts down while the other side keeps playing then he's mis-diagnosing the problem. Protection disconnects both speakers completely regardless of which side is causing the issue, so it may just be a simple dirty relay contact or other dirty switch issue. If he means that he has pinpointed it to the one side causing the relay to trip then it's still fixable but perhaps the price can be negotiated down a little. The SX-1250 is a legendary receiver and absolutely worth having (if you've got the room to put it somewhere).

What is makes it more interesting is the cassette deck in the pic appears to be a Akai/GXC-570D, a $900 TOL item from 1976-8. This info from http://www.vintagecassette.com/Akai/GXC-570D. I can't quite bring myself to check it out, not being a big cassette guy and having no room or bucks for what are probably 2 semi-working, though admittedly classic pieces.
