Pioneer SX-1980 recap and restoration thread!

When it's boiled down, that old list more than likely has obsolete parts numbers on it. It's a starting point.

I STRONGLY expect that the seller will not be very forthcoming with a list of exact parts numbers in the kit. For ANYONE to compare. It's HIS work and HIS profit.

Profit can be made when components can be purchased at larger quantity (multiple kits) discounts. But it was NOT worth the bother to me to get more parts and sell as kits. . It was fun enough
getting 5 to 10 SX-1980 parts sets and then segregate and store them for use with appropriate board numbers, parts names and locations for MY use.

I noticed the captainfantastic07 ebay kit has a lot of red polypropylene film caps, where the BOM on this thread from mouser seemed to have more electrolytic caps? (Maybe I'm mistaken)
FYI, the ebay seller did reply to me saying his kit had everything on that BOM.

I'd want the best components money can buy if I'm going through the effort of doing it.

I find that using these cap lists is too time consuming because there are too many mistakes. I will just have to compare the caps in the manual to the caps on the unit.
For instance, on the tuner board cap list, C43 and C46 are identical caps but the list gives them different part numbers.
AWE-093 c43 10 16 ceanl 647-UKL1V100KDD1TA 10 35
AWE-093 c46 10 16 cea 647-UPW1V100MDD 10 35
Another problem is ...C20 on the tuner board and elsewhere in the lists, Mouser part number 647-UPW1H010MDD,,,,minimum purchase is 4,000 and non in stock with lead time 19 weeks.and on and on
I will use UPW for all caps in the power supply and UKL for all others with the exception of caps that are 4.7 uf or below will be film.

C43 and C46 might be the same value, but they are DIFFERENT caps. CEA and CEANL are two very different things, CEA is a general purpose cap with a leakage rating of .03CV or less. These caps are used in general decoupling and smoothing applications or signal applications where noise isn't a concern. CEANL is a low leakage cap with leakage rating of .003CV or less. It is generally used in signal coupling or anywhere where low noise is beneficial. The UKL is a low leakage cap where as the UPW is a general purpose cap. There IS a difference in the noise floor between a UPW and a UKL, @markthefixer proved this some time ago. Read the Pioneer Tuning Fork docs, it is a big help in understanding the differences and how to read them: https://audiokarma.org/forums/index...uning-fork-service-guide.249745/#post-3012505

The caps on that list are accurate, the replacements might be outdated but that is why these lists are a STARTING reference only, we can help find and recommend substitutes for NLA or out of stock caps.

mattsd, Apparently you have never looked at the schematic or the inside of a SX-1980, because had you looked, it is clear that C43 and C46 are identical caps. Both of those caps are CEANL. C43+ to pin 12 of PA1002A left channel out....C46+ to pin 5 of PA1002A right channel out!! Your list is inaccurate! And please don't lecture me on caps. I have been working on radios for 45 years now!

You are correct, C46 is a CEANL. I misread the intent of your post, my apologies. That list is not mine, this is my list here, verified accurate to my 1980's tuner board and APC board. All the parts are in stock as well.

MattSD is the original poster for this 1980 thread. He's been around a while and has probably the best threads on the 1250/1280 restores as far as pictures go.

Instead of complaining that the lists are inaccurate and pulling some rank of 45 years experience why dont you just build your own. Unless your adding to the conversation no one cares. I agree, the BOM lists generally need attention/verification for many reasons but you don't see people complaining. I combined the (hard) work of two users, MattSD and SaturationPT to creat a BOM for a sx-1250. It's a lot of work, which I thanked them many times for creating a good starting point.

Not to mention there are undocumented revisions to these boards, it's always best to verify. No one claims their BOM is a guaranteed fits all list.

Some pretty excellent information here, except for the parts that no longer open, such as some of the photos and Word documents. Here I am now in my 72's, working on 1980's again. Was there ever, or is there still, a compilation of the CCS replacement for the power supply board? I'd hate to have to re-invent the wheel and cause smoke when it's all been done before. And yes, I pre-emptively acknowedge that this information *may* already exist either in this forum, or elsewhere on the web, but I'm OLD ;-) And seeking help with this mod.

To make matters worse, my Mac Mini on Steroids takes about 4 minutes to "prepare a PDF for printing" and I don't have the patience to sort THAT one out yet. So .... any help is greatly appreciated with this older thread. And I will promise to document and share anything I come up with that may not be so documented yet (nod to Markthefixer) :)
Thanks!

Hate to post on Mattsd's thread.
Start your own and myself and others will offer suggestions.
