Pioneer SX-2000 for sale at local shop, whats a fair offer?

I found a fairly rare Pioneer SX-2000 for sale at a local repair shop. It is clean but untested and as-is. They are willing to test all the tubes. Front faceplate and knobs have several light hairline scratches. AM antenna is cracked in the back. I have seen similar SX-800's sell for around $400 shipped on the 'bay, but zero 2000's. I googled and found a posting for one that was listed at $1000 but never sold. Any idea what a fair offer might be?

We probably know as much as you, the shop and google.

What does the shop think its worth?

It should probably get $500+ worth of restoration work done (all the old caps, probably new tubes, etc.....).
What does the shop want to "restore" it?

It's worth what they will sell it for and someone will pay.
Someone may pay way too much if the cosmetics are excellent, because pretty works better and longer, I guess.

It's worth nothing to me, I don't know where it is, except probably somewhere in Omaha.

Tube gear is like a boat, just a hole in your wallet that sucks out money all the time.
(A boat is a hole in the water that you throw money into).
Either it gets to a good place and stops leaking money, or not.
 
Ha, agreed on the repair part. I have an unfortunate love for overly-complicated tube radios and receivers from the 50's and 60's. I usually end up spending far too much money on parts. I doubt anyone else who wanders into the shop will know what this unit is, so I may get away with making a random offer. They is fairly booked on repairs so probably will not ever get to restoring it. I'd guess they'd charge well over $500 to recap it. If anyone else on this site has purchased a SX-2000 in the past, let me know what you paid (approximately).
 
Forgot to mention, the shop did a quick google, probably saw the unsold posting for $1000, and came back to me at $700.
 
I'm not sure about the SX2000, but I sold a unrestored SX800 for 250$.

The tube Pioneer receivers dont seem to bring the big money of the 70's SS Pioneers.

They also dont bring the money of the tube Fisher etc.

With all that being said, when you do replace all those bad caps, they sound pretty good:).

That's good to hear! I am going to put an offer in at $250 to start and we will see what happens. Hoping to restore a Fisher 800C soon, so this Pioneer would be neat to have alongside it.
 
Scored it for $250! Output tubes tested as a matched quad. Nothing horribly burned underneath. No missing lettering on faceplate or dial glass. Will post a restoration profile in the pioneer section once I get around to this guy.
