Recently I have acquired a Pioneer SX-2500 in nice condition. I paired it with Pradigm 9SE MKII speakers. Wow!! I am really surprised about the sound quality of this receiver! It has very strong tuner section along with auto tuning feature. This is my first Pioneer, I am comparing this with my Sansui 8, Sansui 4000 and Sansui G-5700. At the moment SX-2500 is poring out the best sound among all of them.

There is not much info about this receiver. Any thoughts, memory and opinion regarding this SX-2500?
Will appreciate comments from many experienced users here!!

The sx1500 has been ranked amongst the best sounding receivers ever made (like 2 or 3 in a very short list) and its barely edged out by a Marantz 2230 and a sansui B3000. The 2500 is pretty much a bigger and better 1500. Cap coupled amps all sound so good. Loses output but more than makes up in quality.
I have owned a few, still own 3, 1 dead and 2 alive.
Thanks.
Srinath.

Is Sansui eight cap coupled? My one does not have relay! When I got this SX-2500 right channel power transistors were bad and it is replaced.

Sansui 8 ? no idea, never owned it. I have owned 2230 and still own a B3000 (as well as 2 5000's a 7000 and a lot of other crap).
Thanks.
Srinath.

I bought one brand new from Olson electronics in Whittier California back in 1972, I believe. Paid $500 out the door for it, the tag said $550, plus tax. Loved it from the time I hooked it up to my Utah Heritage 3 way four speaker floor standing speakers which I ordered and received from Allied Radio a few years earlier. It replaced an Eico St-70 kit amp I built for my high school senior electronics project. I disabled the overload protection board on it because it would mute the output on loud passages for a few seconds during peaks at high volume... which never created a problem for the amp. The power tuner and wired remote was very cool as well as all the function lights. It has a socket on it's side for a moving coil transformer as well as the CDS unit for the remote volume control. It came with an owners manual as well as a full service manual. The moving coil transformer was an accessory that did not come with the unit, it had to be ordered separately. It is capacitor coupled to the speakers. To my knowledge it was the last of the capacitor coupled Pioneer units, after that direct usually with a protection relay.

Yea 1973 saw the 50 series and IMHO a rather dull sound. The 80 series from 77-78 on had a sharper sound, much sharper, some say too sharp. I like those. I somehow never warmed to the 50. Of course my first audio piece from the 70's was bought in 2010 so nothing like your experience spicer.
Thanks.
Srinath.

How were you able to disable the overload protection? Mine is muting on loud passages like you described. Thanks

I forgot which wires, been years ago, it came with the full service manual in the box. There is a protection board that removes drive to the main board above a threshold, I removed the feedback wires from the main board to the protection board, cut them, and it quit muting the signal to the main board. It's not complicated, quite straightforward with the schematic and board layout in front of you. There are two wires to cut, one for each channel.

Thanks. I dont read schematics but if someone can show me which wires to nip, that would be awesome lol. Its a really great sounding unit aside from that protection unit kicking in on loud passages.

It's been so long ago I completely forgot which wires but hopefully somebody reading will guide you. The protection board is on the underside of the unit, I think the schematic is on Hi Fi Engine, free for the price of joining. You can download the schematic and post it here and someone will be able to tell you which are the feedback wires. It might help to start a new thread to get attention on the subject, not sure about that but it seems to help when others do it. This is a fairly old thread.

You know, right out of the box the muting circuit seemed too sensitive, mine was brand new, and at first I was a bit cautious of messing with it but I did and it never gave a problem, quite cutting out at high volume with heavy bass, must add that I didn't abuse it but did play it loud.
