I recently purchased a Marantz 1520 reciever that has issues not mentioned when I bought it. So now I'm looking at 3 recievers on sleazbay 2 Pioneers-an SX-3700 and a SX-3600 and a Nikko NR-615. Which do you think would come closest to that "warm" Marantz sound or has its own "warm" sound. I'm not concerned with "most power" but I am looking for good sound in a decent vintage amp. Please give me your opinions and rate them 1,2,3 if you would.

I think you'll like the SX-3700. It's rated at 45 wpc but the one I just finished up benched out at 54 wpc both driven before clipping. No one really uses that much power when listening to music.

I'd go with the 3700 as well. I just got a SX-3600, and love it--but would chose more power if given the chance. I would say that my 3600 has a very "clean" sound--not sure about warmth. It really depends on what speakers you are using as well.
 
I have not heard the Nikko, but I do have an SX-3700 and like it alot. I find it warm, maybe not Marantz warm though. It does sound nice
and looks great :)

Pioneer. Besides the reasons stated here the Nikkos are just not as well made and the Pioneer will retain it's value much better.

Why not wait around for a Marantz to show up, that's working, if that is the sound you are after? I had an SX-3800 and while I liked it and thought it sounded great, I wouldn't characterize it's sound as 'warm'. It was very clean and clear, not really warm at all. I've read the 3800 and 3900 were the ones to have from that series.

I have an SX-939, however, that I think sounds more along the 'warm' side as far as Pioneers go. If I were looking for something that has a Marantz type sound, I'd look either for a marantz or maybe a Sansui. My 5000x is very much in the warm camp.
 
I agree with John, I have a SX 727 and it is much warmer sounding than my SX-3800. All of the older 3 digit model number models are warmer to my ear. If you still want a flouoscan receiver I would hold out for a 3800. They still go for remarkably little considering what you get.
