Pioneer SX-3700 loud crackling

I came across a Pioneer SX-3700 at an antique store for $20. I brought it home and cleaned it up, then hooked a pair of cheap speakers to it. The volume control makes loud crackling noises as it is moved, even when it is all the way down. Does this sound like dirty controls, or does something else need replacing?

Clean the controls and then see what it does.

For a temporary fix rapidly move the volume pot back and forth and see if that helps. Do this with the unit off.

Thought so, but figured i'd ask. Thank you :) I'll get back to you once I can track some Deoxit down. All of my local radio shacks are gone, so I might even have to order some.

I like to use some contact cleaner from the hardware store , then deoxit.

Some people like to use just deoxit but the dirt just mixes with the lube and causes problems later down the road. Just an old trick a technician of 40 years told me .

No, don't use WD-40.
Deoxit can be found at Radio Shack maybe even Guitar Center.
I thought there is a sticky here somewhere on the procedure for cleaning potentiometers. Can't find it now, I'll look a bit further.

You have to be very careful with contact cleaner because sometimes there are parts inside that can become damaged because they don't react well with the solvents in contact cleaner. For instance, some Sherwoods are sensitive to this. I would be wary of using contact cleaner. :P

Check out amazon. I got a combo of deoxit and faderlube for pretty cheap. Use the faderlube on the pots and deoxit on the switches.

Once I can get some, and for future reference, would it only be the top cover I need to remove to get to the contacts, or do I need to remove the bottom cover to?

Depends on what model you're working on. My sansui 5050 requires the bottom to be removed while my pioneer sx-780 has required the top.

Guitar Center has Deoxit. Don't bother with Radio Shack, they like to push their house brand equivalent of Deoxit, and it is a poor substitute at best. Last time I checked, none of the local Radio Shack stores even had Deoxit in stock.
