Pioneer SX-50; Intermittent Power Issues

My main bedroom stereo is a beautiful 1983 Pioneer SX-50. It sounds incredible, with 50 WPC at 0.007% THD. The only problem with this unit is that it seems to have a dirty power switch, and this problem only occurs when the stereo is "cold", being turned on after a few hours, or the next day.

When I power on the stereo, the display will occasionally flicker once, very briefly, and then resume normal operation without any issues. Other times, the stereo will very quickly power off, and then turn back on. This happened to me yesterday. I was listening to a CD, then suddenly, the stereo's display flickered and clicked off the speaker relay and powered off, and immediately turned back on. Then, the speaker relay clicked back on about 3 seconds later as usual, and the stereo worked without issue for the rest of my day. This all happened in just one second, and I'm thinking that there's some carbon build-up on the contacts of the power switch. Does anyone have any experience with an issue like this?

It looks like the power switch may still be available, but at almost 40 bucks for a switch..you could search around here for the triac modification...once you clean your switch, then do this modification to make that switch last alot longer...its all of 5 -6 dollars in parts.

How should I go about cleaning the switch? Would a shot of CRC Contact Cleaner be alright?

I wouldn’t use something that strong in it.. there are several methods .. take it apart and clean, spray something like deoxit in there and work it on off ... I’d make sure anything used was plastic safe.

I guess it depends on your comfort level..
