I just got a pioneer sx-580 but the left channel does not work. All I can get is a very loud buzzing no matter what the volume is set at. I tried switching the speakers but still have the same problem. The problem is the same on the left A channel as well as the left B channel. I'm not sure what the problem could be but does this sound like it is something that could be fixable? Thanks in advance for any help.

Since the other channel works, it's probably the module.
Electronix.com carries the stk0029 power amp module used in the 580. I believe it is even socketed, instead of soldered onto the pc board.
(to the gallery, the 580 has no protection relay - just fuses in the output circuit, so a popped module won't shut down the other channel as well.)
(get) Some (thin layer - 0.001 inch for example) thermal grease ("white goop", electronix.com # 20-127-1.5G) to mount the new one and you should be set.

I agree with Mark- I think I would swap that output module out. Make sure you clean all traces of the white thermal grease off of the heatsink surface before you install the new one. Old grease gets hard, and will push the new module away from the heat sink. Not a good thing.

Well, yes, I usually recommend that, and it looks like it won't hurt in this case either.
Give the power a few minutes to dissipate before pulling out and plugging in the modules.

Usually, that is correct. I would have to go look at the schematic and board layout to be sure, but I don't recall those being reversed. I also don't recall those being socketed as Mark says, but he is usually right! If that is the case, swapping those devices around will be easy. Don't run the receiver any longer than it takes to confirm that the problem has switched sides once you have made the device swap.
One thing you may want to be aware of. On 680's one of the things that happens is the ground screw at the PCB and heat sink for the output devices loosens up. This ground path is used. When this happens, it seems (oddly) that the left channel blows up more often than the right channel does. I would presume that the 580 might be similar. Make sure ground screws are tight before you do this swap.

I had this issue with my SX-580 project...yes they are socketed...I went ahead and ordered a pair of them, popped in new fuses all around just for good measure...and now it plays fine...try swapping them first though.
