I am working on a nice Pioneer SX-60 receiver, kind of a nice transaction visually between the classic look and the equipment with loads of power, bells and whistles but are generally quite uninspiring visually.
When I started it up after sitting for years the left channel was very weak and there was a low hum that was constant even when the volume knob was turned all the way down.
So I Deoxited the volume and balance controls as well as a number of the switches. That cleared up some scratchy sound but the left channel was still very weak and the hum persisted. I began to press on different areas of the board and as I did suddenly the left channel reappeared. I noticed that messing with the multi strand wires going into the many connectors on the board would make the left channel either come on strong or go back to a weak level. So I sprayed Deoxit into the connectors the wires went into and jiggled the wires a bit and the sound and left channel returned to normal. And, no more hum!!
I reasoned that these wires and connectors needed a good cleaning and tried to disconnect the connectors containing the wires from the board. No go. I cannot figure out how to disconnect them so I can clean off the wires protruding from the board. Either there's some trick to get the connectors to release or they are permanently attached to the board (though they wiggle slightly) and the stripped wire ends are pressed into them in a one-way mating exercise never to be removed and the best I can hope for is to shoot Deoxit down the holes, wiggle the wires and be happy and hopeful.
So the question: are these connectors removable? If so, how? I can't see any special little levers, clips or other means to get them to release. Don't be fooled by how they look. IF you've worked on these and KNOW from your own experience how to solve this, let us all know. If I looked at the pictures never having messed with this system before, I'd have lots of ideas how to release them, but I'd be wrong.
