Pioneer SX-750 for $100?

Hey guys,

A local guy is offering a Pioneer SX-750 for $100. That said, it is not working, meaning (according to the seller) that it won't power on. He sent me pictures of the inside, it looks like it's in relatively good shape. That said, is it really worth it? Definitely the bonnet will need to be replaced. It's in poor shape.

Besides that, is it worth taking a risk? It can be as simple as the power/speaker switch, could be a fuse, and certainly I'd replace some of the capacitors.

Any advice is appreciated!

TIA....Joe

The 50 series lineup is good stuff. The 750, to me, strikes a good balance with useful, quality sound and not being so dang heavy. Just ask any 1250 owner. I've had 2.

With that said, at this point, she will need a thorough going over, and a recap is really needed.

You're in Chicago, shouldn't be a chore to find a decent tech. Many here on these boards from that area.

Best of luck.

I've owned a few of the '50 series, all were quite nice. I currently have a '550 that I just went through, had shorted finals and a few other issues when I got it, sounds nice now.

One of the nice things about that series is that every model had a discrete output stage, so if the finals get damaged, finding an equivalent transistor is easy. The '80 series, on the other hand, uses ICs in the lower models.

I'll say it, @jpreza

I think that 25 of that 100 bucks spent to be a member for a year, and access to Bartertown, would allow that 75 left to go towards a receiver in far better shape for not much more than you were planning to pay.

Bartertown has some very well-maintained gear. This doesn't appear to be "in good nick" as the British say.

That’s what I was wondering if $100 was really worth it what do you think?
I would probably pass and I've restored at least a half dozen receivers. It's worth $100 if you part it out on eBay but that's work too. I mean, its a gamble. You could get lucky but if the seller doesn't know what the issue is besides its not working, you're taking a chance. And it needs a new case or refurb as well. I'd look for a working unit. Sony STR 6065/7065 series are nice and not as high priced as Pioneer and Marantz. $100 more might get you a working unit.

That is definitely a great idea! Besides myself there are quite a few Chicago-area members who can probably help jpreza out.

Thanks guys! Definitely will join! This unit has definitely seen better days. I believe some sellers believe because it's "vintage" gear, it's worth money, especially the Pioneer x50 series.

Glad to see this decision. If, say, Zebulon1 or MarktheFixer were to buy this, yeah, sure. But I wouldn't want you spending money on a real basket case.

Also, on Bartertown, we always cut each other good deals. Keep it in the family kind of thing. Happy hunting!!!

PS - You can post a WTB for a good silver face receiver, or whatever you're looking for. Think of your needs, do your homework, and you'll get something great. Hell, if you were closer, I got a sweet Onkyo Integra I'd let go for what you planned on paying. You WILL find a great piece of gear, just be patient.

The cut and spliced(?) power cord makes me think it may have been at a recycler previously? Some of those places cut cords to reduce their liability, or so I've read.
