Pioneer SX-780 goes into protection mode after being on for a while

I’d love to search this site for what you said but apparently the search feature hasn’t been working for a while now. At least on any device I’ve tried I get an error message. So there is no searching for anything and that really sucks. Leaves me with no way to find useful information.

I just searched for info on a Pioneer SX-1980. All I did on Google was to type Pioneer SX-1980, Audiokarma.org.

Use Google to search the site. The syntax would be:
"site: audiokarma.com (search terms)"
Don't use the quotation marks or parentheses when entering the search.
Something like:
TA7136 audiokarma
No quotes needed.
Google automatically looks and presents all the AK posts.

As I said in my post.

Using the "site:" syntax limits the search to AK. Otherwise, it will pull results related to the query that include the term audiokarma....some of which may not be from the AK site. Not a big deal, but if you want to search AK specifically, use the "site:" syntax.

Check out the Datasheet attachment.
Link to a post that should get you started.
Just use Google and add "Audiokarma" after your search query. I think the AK search feature is a google search function anyway.
Doc had a good suggestion to freeze spray the small signal transistors when it acts up. That might be worth a try.

1. Supply Voltage : Pins 4 and 7 : should have +-20 or so. Pin 7, +20v, Pin 4, -20v's.
2. Pin 1 should have 10.4 volts.
3. Pins 2, 3, 6 should be zero volts.
4. Pin 5 should be lower than pin 7 and check both chip pin 5 for a comparison.

Not sure why I am getting the 20v on pin 1 but I really think I found the issue with this going into protection mode. The replacement power modules I put in were the issue. Well, the install was… the jumper wires from the model to the main board were touching the bottom cover. This explains why I never had it happen with the bottom cover off. Apparently the insulation on the jumper wires is extremely thin. I found this issue when I decided to reinstall the bottom cover. I turned the unit back on and picked it up to put it back into position and I heard a static pop from one speaker and it was in protection mode. I then grabbed the unit and flexed the entire thing. It would go in and out of protection. I took the cover off the bottom and when I would hold it in place by hand and move it a bit the problem would happen. I noticed the insulation on the jumpers to the power module felt like there was a nick in them. I bent them over so they wouldn’t touch the cover and it’s been on for hours without the issue happened. Fingers crossed ! I feel stupid if that was the issue‍♀️‍♀️

replace the wires. there is no reason to keep a wire in a unit that may have a nick in it.

make them short

I will do that. Bent them over to for the time being to eliminate them from the equation. I’m going to let it sit for a few days lowered up and see if it goes into protection. Not going to move it at all for a few days. Here’s the jumpers on mine. A bit long and tall…

that is not as long as i was expecting to see honestly. hope you got it sorted. if you haven't seen this, here's power and distortion numbers:

A lot of issues trace back to trapped wires, untrimmed leads, and putting a long screw in a hole where a short one should be. Don't feel bad, we've all been there at one time or another.

I'm VERY careful with clipped leads, I've had stuff shorted out by a stray one, huge pain.

i've got a concept 3.5 and 4.5 and they both have 1 hole on the bottom that is labeled for a short screw. 4mm. mighty nice of them.

They just touch the bottom cover. It hasn’t gone into protection since I bent them out of the way. I will test like this for a few days and then replace the jumpers. Hoping the issues he remembered are all cured now. This unit sounds amazing with these power modules. I’ve never heard this deep of base from my speakers and it still has that great warm full and deep vintage sound stage.

I definitely don’t know it all and am always learning. This will be something I will always check for in the future. I spent years dabbling with cb radios and now I’ve stumbled into the vintage audio gear… this is clicking on my brain fairly well. I’ve always had a passion for old audio gear. I look forward to everything I’m going to learn on this journey.
