Saw a Pioneer SX-850 at my local thrift store. They had it behind the counter. Priced at $549

Is that a good price? They claimed it works.

The times of finding these for $50 on a shelf are clearly over.

No!

They more then likely checked completed sales on the bay. My guess is it was plugged in, it lit up, sound came out of it so it must work.

Not knowing your local.
Just seeing what gear is going for right now, crazy crazy times.
At that price for the unit it would need to be a working keeper.

I had one. It was mint with manuals. $75. I tested it before I bought it. Worked fine. Got it home and it worked fine for 10 minutes and then lost sound. Although all lights worked.
Took it to Merrylander, and the Q5, and Q7 Transistors were bad. I gave him some piece of equipment in trade for his services and everything was fine.
It took a while and I sold it for $175. And that took a while.
All 12 years ago.

I can remember when you could have had the 1250 on Ebay for $600.......

The vintage receiver market is ridiculous.

Times have certainly changed.I sold my 9090db for $250 about six or seven years ago. On a side note I know your avatar pic.I remember seeing it in a magazine about twenty years ago.Eerie.

I sold the regular 9090 for the same price in 2010. Worked great, put it up for one month, decided to sell it and the morning the guy came by to purchase it it had a dead channel. I got Merrylander to fix it. Pissed me off. Piece of junk! Buyer came back and bought it.

The prices for these units are crazy.

In 2010, many of us were still getting regular audio Scroes at the thrift stores. It really is crazy what the current values online are at. I looked up the SA-9500 II and saw one sell for 900 plus shipping.

These so-called Thrift stores are no longer thrifty. They all now sit there and look up eBay pricing and try to sell for that price point. As mentioned above, for those prices I'd want a money back guarantee considering it would be bought from a business.

So what would be a reasonable price for this receiver? Provided it works of course. I'm tempted to try and haggle. It's been sitting there for quite a while now.

They mostly send anything good to their website, at least in the case of Goodwill.

And unless you collect vintage receivers and it doesn't matter whether it works or not than spending $500+ on that particular unit makes little sense to me, you, and many other folks on here.

Condition makes a huge difference with these. You need to really look it over. Any nicks on any of the knobs? Scratches to the case? Do the bulbs all work? Then you need to take off the cost of having it gone through. I wouldn’t want to be any more than $300 into a nice one of these.

My bother bought a nice SX-1050 about five years ago which at the time was a decent price ($300).Now they are asking $1,000-1,200 for them on Ebay.

I agree with Lazarus Long but if it was in perfect working and cosmetic condition I think $400 would be a decent price.
