I have a Pioneer SX-880 that I bought a couple of years ago on Craigslist for $150. Has always worked perfectly except there has been some motorboating developing recently on all the inputs. Took it into an electronics repair shop and they quoted me a $275 repair for parts + labor, stating it had a lot of faulty parts on the main board. On one hand, that would be almost twice what I had purchased the receiver for, but I would also probably be out at least 200 anyways to purchase a comparable receiver (plus the time cost to look for it), might not get much money off selling the old receiver if anyone notices the motorboating, and the new one would be in an unknown state of repair. I really love the SX-880, too. Should I just bite the bullet and pay to get it fixed? It is a very highly regarded shop, but maybe I should take the receiver somewhere else?

No, at least I haven't noticed the lights dimming when it happens.

Probably the sd712 that overheats and desolders itself while burning the board. A lot of people also use speakers that are lower than 8 ohms and that really heats this up. If I'm correct then $275 to replace one transistor (if they even do that) seems too high. I have two and it didn't take that long to recap and replace all transistor and diodes/rectifiers.

not hard to doubt the shop labor charge.i havent been in the states in decades but i wouldnt be surprised if anyone's labor rate is 100$ an hour! thats just what thimgs cost. i shudder to think what the charge would be to TOTALLY rebuild an sx 1980.

He might be leaving the charge at the higher end to deal with other contingencies that he may need to address while he's in there.
But if you are technical at all this could be easy enough for you to check with a can of freeze spray on TR (whatever the sd712 is).
I assume you are getting this in both channels and if so, this is a powersupply issue? Pioneer powersupplies were often underrated for the power they had to deliver, resulting in issues arising every now and then.
