Have a chance to pick up a Pioneer SX-9000 for not too much coin.
Any opinions on the quality of these unit?

It was a top of the line unit around 70'~71' probably not the level of the later 1970's units, but for what it is, I wouldn't pass it up. I think its notch above my SX-1500TD, and I like mine quite a bit. You'll probably have to clean up the controls with some Deoxit cleaner, and if its a long term keeper then it could use a recap sometime. I recapped my 1500 with good results.

One nice little feature these have is the built in reverb. If it is working correctly it should be a nice sounding receiver.

Thanks to all so far.
From the photos it looks like it is in nice shape, the owner said the volume control may need some help. I am hoping a shot of Deoxit will take care of it.

I have an sx9000 that's as cherry as a unit come. A soldier in Vietnam sent the unit home to his folks here in the states only he never came home. It sat around in it's original box for a few decades till I came along. I like this old reciever very much and it has become much more musical over time. Has a really neat looking dial and a very handsome wood case. I'd bring another one home if it's not much coin like you say.

Picked it up tonight and will post pictures when I can. Unit is in okay shape but will need a good cleaning and probably a re-stain but given the age it is expected. Those T speaker connections will be interesting but the owner gave me some type of connectors that I can use.

He had the unit hooked up to a pair of Infinty's (SW-125-I think) and based on the the samples he played off of his I-Pod it seems like a very musical unit. Volume control is scratchy but will probably right itself after a bit of Deox.

We would love to see some pics.

That's an old receiver. Congrat's... I think those were called polarized connectors.. I have an Allied receiver that used them...

Here's pics of the unit.
A bit dusty inside but it lights up.
Any ideas on what is the easiest/best way to hook up the speakers?

You can use a spade crimp on terminal to shove into the speaker jacks. Something like this would work well. Probably could find it in the electrical section at Autozone. Otherwise I think you can still buy them new from Pioneer's parts website. You might have to call them to get the part number.
By the way, Nice looking reciever. A little tung oil will freshen up the cabinent quite nicely.

Thanks for the link, I will have to look around for something similar.
I think the cabinet will clean up nicely once I get to it.

You can also do a search for Pioneer speaker plugs on google or eBay.
But worth trying the Pioneer site too.

As mentioned, some people just crimp on a lug to bare wires and plug them in. May actually be more secure than the plug's screw on terminal - depending on the gauge of your wire. Just make sure your + and - are consistent.

I have the spades that will fit that. It should not be a problem except now you have speaker wires that will only work for that receiver. By the way......HAPPY BIRTHDAY....8/6/60....now everyone knows !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cleaned it up a bit....

Opened it up last night and it was very dusty. Looks like it had been sitting in storage for awhile which I am hoping translates to mean it was little used. Cleaned up pretty well though I need to get some Deoxit and go over it one more time. Gave the cabinet a quick swipe with Murphy's oil. It looks pretty good but I am wondering if it would not benefit from a light sanding and restain.

Wolverine, gotta tell ya man, great story. Much credit given for getting this stereo back on making music!

The unit looks pretty mint--A definite plus. I briefly own a Lafayette LR1500t which was basically a Pioneer SX-1500t. I personally love the sound of the early Solid state units. :thmbsp:

Got the unit hooked up for the first time tonight (thanks to the help of fellow AK Treserious who supplied me with 3 original speaker connectors) and initial impressions is very favorable. The tuner section probably still need a little clean up but is still pretty good. I have hooked up to a pair of Imperial 5G's and the bass output is amazing. It needs to shake of some of the rust gathered from sitting around but overall I'm happy with this pick-up. I am going to go ahead and restain the cabinet, give it another cleaning and use it as secondary system.
