PIONEER SX-950 STARTED CUTTING OUT PLEASE HELP NEED TO JAM

I was on the computer listening to my SX-950 at a low volume thinking I sure do love my 950. I decided to put to put some good tunes on and turn it up a little. I barely turned up the volume all 4 speakers started cutting out. I can't get past the first mark on the volume knob without it doing this. You can hear a clicking noise in the receiver when the sound cuts out. Please can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks Gas4Harley

That is the speaker relay clicking, either you have too much DC offset or there is a problem with your power supply or protection board. Have you replaced anything in this receiver? If so please post what has been changed out. If not hopefully you have a digital multi meter and know how to use it. You will need to post voltages of the power supply and the protection board. They are both accessed through the bottom metal cover,I think there are 9 screws that have to be removed in order to get to these boards.DC offset is also accessed through the bottom and I have attached pics from the manual explaining what voltages are factory and how to adjust offset, you will also need to open the top(4 screws) and take off the wooden bonnet to get to the adjustment trimmers for offset.Follow steps 6 & 7 for offset adjustment. The service manual is here: http://www.kallhovde.com/pioneer/sx-950smhires.pdf

No, nothing has been replaced. Yes I do have a digital meter. Thanks for your reply.

Are the four speakers rated at 4 ohms or less? They need to be no less than 8 ohms if you're going to really crank up two pairs at once (although at low volumes it should be fine with two 4 ohm pairs switched on). Also check for shorted speaker wiring or a defective speaker with an internal short. The resistance across the power amp outputs may be too low and the protection may just be doing its job, protecting that beautiful receiver. Try it with just one pair of speakers on, also check the impedance rating of the speakers and check the speaker wiring for shorts (especially at the ends where stray strands can touch).

WOW! I switched off the B speakers and its doing fine. I have a pair of Polk Audio RTiA7 on the A and a pair of Polk's RTiA3 on the B side. I will check my wiring. Thank you so much for your help. YOU ARE THE MAN!

Glad that's all it was. The SX-950 is one of my favorites, mine is my "daily driver" and has been pushing a pair of AR3a's for years without missing a beat. Life is indeed good!!:music:

Too bad about WNTI, my favorite radio station from up your way. Was never a huge XPN fan plus now the great local programming is gone.
