Pioneer SX-950 Tuning knob set screw stripped.

Greetings everyone, I recently purchased a SX-950. Upon removing the face plate I see that the 1.5mm set screw is rounded out. Does anyone have any advice on the next I should take to remove the tuning knob?. Thank you for any advice.

Its been awhile but I think you can disassemble the assembly from the back side of the dial where the dial string winds around the end of the shaft. A set screw and a slight twist to unthread the shaft from the weight. Watch out for a washer.

The proper size Allen wrench is a 1.5mm for the grub screw in the knob.

Still trying. I first tried the epoxy on the end of the allen wrench and it dry all night and day. It didn't hold. I'm now trying the my wife nail polish. If that doesn't work I'll try the left handed drill bit. Thanks for being there.
 
No problem brother, we're here to help. I think Lowes or home depot have an easy out drill set in their tool department.

Sometimes I drill out the stripped set screw and retap the hole with a slightly larger set screw, just dont go so deep as to damage the tuning shaft
 
As a machinist, I have gone to SAE for a MM wrench this small with some success. You could try using the .0625 wrench, which is .0035 larger than the 1.5mm, which might tighten enough in your egged hole. Don't use the ball end. you want maximum engagement. LIGHTLY tap the wrench into the hex hole to get tight fit. If it doesn't go in, buff the end of the wrench to remove the anodize, which is typically .0005-.0008 thk, then try again. Let me know how it goes. Other than that, a 1/16 drill bit is your only recourse. I prefer easy-outs to left twist drills. A gunsmith kit typically has the size you need.

Wow! Had a time trying to find left handed drill bits. Home Depot & Lowes didn't know what I was talking about. Good old Amazon. The bits arrive today and I started drilling. I started with a 3/32 then a 7/64 and now a 1/8.
How long is this set screw? It seems to be going on forever. I drill a little while pulling outward on the knob. Is the tuning shaft a brass color? Will the knob slip off easily once when I reach the bottom of the set screw? Thank you for your reply.

Harbor Freight sells LH drill bits for not a lot of coin. They're probably only good for 2-3 uses but they're cheap enough it doesn't matter.

I am pretty sure this screw is an M3-0.5, so the McMaster should work. Use a 5/64 drill as shown. This drill is going to be very close to your minor diam of screw thread. (3mm = .118") - (drill = .0781) = .0399 - .0199 wall. so be careful.
At this point it would probably be easier to just drill out the whole diameter (3mm) and re-chase the thread. You are doing the right thing by pulling/pushing knob slightly as you drill. Keep working slowly, it will come off.

Thanks so much for your advice. Still drilling a little each day after work. Using a jewelers loop I still don't see any brass color of the tuning shaft. But I'm able to hold the weight behind the tuning knob and turn the tuning knob about a half turn in both directions. You would think it would slip off if it did that. I guess I should keep drilling.
 
Yeah...the brass is soft, so the set screw has bitten into it some. If you are able to rock it back and forth, it will come off, but it will gall the shaft pretty good. It's up to you if you want to replace the shaft afterward, but you could smooth it down. Don't be too worried about drilling into the shaft a little. You will still have plenty to clamp when you put it back on.

Great news today everybody. After taking a break of Thanksgiving, I went back to removing that pesky screw. I got the turning knob off and started cleaning all knobs and switches. I would like to thank everyone for their advice & help.Would anybody know a easy way to adjust radio tuning needle. It should be on 97.1 but its on 97.3 If any of you good people know a easy way bump it up a little Please let me know. Thanks for any info guys, Thanks again ~Sam~
 
It might be best to begin a new thread for the scale issue with the tuner. It moves away from the mechanical realm and into the alignment world, and some of the adjustments to realign the scale are not that daunting.
