There's a Pioneer SX-950 for sell on craigslist in my area for 150$, but the seller says the sound drops out randomly at times.

Is this a common problem with the sx-950? It's kinda hard to tell without opening up the unit to see whats really going on, but I'm curious if this is a common problem that is easily diagnose and fixed. Should I jump on this. The sx-950 is a monster. From what I've read about it, It's one great piece.

It could just be dirty switches. Anything else is also fixable on a sx 950. If the cosmetics are good (you cannot fix cosmetics) I would buy it.
 
Sale price notwithstanding (value/price estimates should be discussed in the
Dollars and Sense Forum) the 950 is a solid performer. Since the audio reportedly is intermittent, that MAY be a good sign. Since the sound "comes back" after it goes away, that may indicate a less severe problem(s) than if it were completely dead. There are some common problems with the units, but nothing that cannot be rectified.
