Hello everyone, I am a new member.
I bought a used Pioneer TX 9500 ll Tuner and its works fine except the large tuning knob feels like it’s hard to turn. Unlike my Pioneer SX 750 Receiver, that tuning knob spins freely. I almost have to crank the knob from station to station. Is this normal?

That's not normal at all.

I'd take off the top to see what is going on, sounds like either something is interfering with the string's movement or the knob's mechanism is damaged or needs cleaning.
 
The tunung shaft mechanism going through the front panel could need lubing - but NO LUBE AT ALL ON THE STRING...

The assembly disassembles for cleaning, and there are adjustments that control how "tight" the feel is, from flopping around, to too darn tight to turn. Then there's probably a lock set screw or some non intuitive threaded nuts. Sometimes that lock can come loose, and actually tighten up.

They don't break down the axa-114 dial shaft assembly any further than that it is mounted in the panel. If you want further assistance, a few close up pictures of the back of the flywheel will be helpful.

is not helpful, as it doesn't list what other units the axa-114 is used in, the axa-111 is in the 1250, so it could be similar.

Thank so much for you advice. When I took the cover off I found nothing out of place. Will dig into the unit deeper and let you know how it turns out. Just got good news my Spec 4 has been fully rebuilt and will be shipped back soon. Can't wait to hood it up.

I`d check first to make sure the tuning knob itself isn`t pushed in too far and rubbing. That happened to me once before and I just gave it a slight back and forth pulling action and it spun freely after that.
