Pl-51 vs pl-530

I might have a chance to pick up one of two pioneer tts - the pl-51 or the pl-530. The 530 is missing it's dust cover and has issues with the auto play. Otherwise it's in excellent condition. The pl-51 works but I don't know more. It has a cover but it's got a big piece missing from it. Any advice?

EDIT: I actually had a PL-50, not a PL-51. So my comments aren't valid. Apologies.

Would either of these tables be appropriate if I wanted something to upgrade and generally screw around with? Another way of asking - how much of these pioneers are proprietary and can I swap out tonearms on them?

The black plastic tone arm base on the Pioneer PL-530 may develop cracks, check it carefully.

When you remove the factory/original tone arm you will most likely not be able to keep the auto return functions.

With sufficient skill, determination and deep pocket, you can install almost any tone arm you like. :scratch2:

There are only 2 screws that hold the tone arm base to the main table. If that breaks, very hard to repair. Had it happen to me. Finally sold it. :sigh:

Purchased new in 1974, I still own the manual direct drive PL-51.
It still works fine although I have a different TT in use.

Pioneer PL-530

Fortunately my is still intact, don't know for how much longer.

Anyone out there looking to do a 3D printer project? :D :scratch2:

I love my PL-51. Just got mine last weekend. It needed a new tonearm rest, but other then that its in nice shape.

The DB rating means nothing to me. I have a Realistic LAB-400 with a 65DB rating and my PL-41 and PL-50 are both rated at 50DB and they sound alot better.

It is possible that the LAB-400 has gotten noisier over the years. Other factors could also be involved. Don't want to hijack this thread so I will leave it at that.
