PL-530 gets a new suit and unintentional rebuild

I did take some pictures before I started pulling things apart but, honestly, I don't have have the patience to take notes or detailed pictures. I bagged an labeled the screws but other than that I just crossed my fingers and hoped everything went back together.

It actually wasn't too daunting. Unsolder the tonearm wires - hopefully without buggering them up because there is NO slack if you shorten them. Remove 2 pieces of mechanism so that you can remove the tonearm. The rest unscrews from the plinth and can be lifted out carefully without too much trouble.
 
Very nice. I bought my PL-530 new in January 1978!! Still works and it is all original. That is quite the mechanism inside; what a mess when it is apart. I'd love to veneer mine.

Yeah, I've got a PL-560 in that "lovely" silver vinyl. I'm seriously thinking about veneering it but disassembly looks a bit daunting. Maybe I'll wait 'til it starts to peel. :)

Yes it has the stock arm but the headshell is not the one that came with the PL-530 and since I buggered up the bayonet mount, the wires run straight from the cartridge and through the arm.

I'd love a fully stock arm but can't afford to put any more $$$ into this thing right now.

Beautiful job! I have a PL-530 as well, the previous owner had removed the peeling vinyl wood veneer. How difficult is it to take the TT apart and then re-assemble it? Did you have any prior experience on another TT? I'd like to try it but I'm just wondering how difficult it is.

It really wasn't too difficult. Two pieces of the mechanism had to be removed so that the tone arm would unscrew and be removed from the top. Everything else unscrewed from the plinth full assembled.

Adjusting everything after it was back together was a PITA but not impossible.

I just picked up a PL-530 yesterday with a wobbly arm which I'm hoping is only something loose and not broken. Once I get some of these other projects out of my way (right!!) a re-veneer and repair is in order.
 
So, I'm updating this 12 year old thread.

I sold this turntable back in 2011 or so at a yard sale. Then, with more repair experience, I started to wish I hadn't. To my surprise, (and on my birthday!) it came up on Marketplace. The veneer had not held up well.

Long story short, I rebuilt it again, in Walnut this time.

Talk about a full circle! Veneer job #2 looks great.

I've got a 570 that would be a real looker with a new veneer job, even though the original vinyl covering is mostly intact.
