PL L1000 Tonearm

Well suddenly the tonearm of my PL L1000 won't lift until it scrapes the edge of the paper label. It drops where it's supposed to.......... I have the service manual, it references the use of an oscilliscope, taking it apart etc. I don't have a scope. Is there another way?

You can probably use a multimeter on the test points, if there are any. Should just be a potentiometer that needs adjusting.
 
Thank you FluxT.........I'll take a close look at the service manual and see if I can figure it out, you are correct in that there are potentiometers. I think the measurements are taken from two sensors............the value between A and B. I just hate the thought of cracking that thing open!
 
The problem with the test points on the PL-L1000 is that you can't get to them with the unit's cables plugged in. The service manual specifies using a special test cable that I've never seen. However, I had some spare parts and made my own extension cable (actually three cables) so the top cover can be set next to the bottom cover while still plugged in and operational. Then you can access the test points and use an oscilloscope to make the adjustments. If you're feeling adventurous you can separate the top and bottom halves of the unit and try adjusting potentiometer VR4 to see if you can get it working.

If you can find someone in your area with a scope and knowledge to perform the adjustment per the service manual I'd be willing to ship the extension cables to you.

Joe, thank you for your generous offer. I would imagine the leads are fairly easy to make? That would save you some trouble. I have searched a 200 mile radius for a used scope. As far as new I have several to choose from. Is a 100 Mhz the right capacity if purchasing one? (I'm on a very low budget, nothing new) Anything I should keep away from? Again, I really appreciate your help

The leads aren't hard to make but you need the male connectors from a control board and the female connectors from a spare cable. Luckily I had some spares thanks to the generosity of @cason that I used to make up the cables. They are light and don't take up much space so shipping would only be a few dollars.

As far as a scope I'll let others more familiar with specs answer that but I believe 100Mhz would be fine. There are no high speed signals involved in the PL-L1000 setup so just about any scope would work. Also, there is a wealth of knowledge and help available from the AK community. You could probably find a member near you with a scope who would help you out for a few cold beverages.
