Playback is normal but recording is too fast

Hi!
This is my second thread I've made about this deck but I just recently got it and still trying to figure it out. My Kenwood KX-1030 plays pretty normal. Over the course of 4 minutes it falls behind about one second. However, when recording with the deck, it was fast a whole 9 seconds in the same time tested on the same deck it was recorded on. This is a difference that is definitely audible. This doesn't seem like something that can be fixed by just turning the potentiometer screw, right? Any ideas?

Edit: Tested on a Demon DRM-510 and its about 11 seconds fast over four minutes which is consistent with the other being about a second slow

Hi Daltons314,

check your power supplies for ripple. The record speed may be changing as there is more load on the power supplies due to the Erase/Bias Oscillator running. You may need some electrolytics replacing!!!

I would clean the capstans and rubber rollers very well, do it multiple times with iso alcohol 99%. Clean the heads too. When recording they could be slipping causing recording to be slow,so when playing back it would be fast. Try simple things first.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one. I did a very light cleaning when I fist got this deck but I went through about 15 q-tips cleaning it this time. Records completely normally now. Thank you so much

The transport mechanism does the same exact thing whether in record mode or playback mode. Mode has no effect on transport speed.

If tapes were recorded with a slow running machine, they will sound normal when played back on the same machine.

Tapes recorded with a slow running machine will sound too fast when played back on a machine running at correct speed.

Tapes recorded at the proper speed will sound too slow when played back on a tape machine that is running too slow.

I understand what you're saying but that's what it is. It was the same way with multiple different cassette types and brands.
My first couple recordings actually didn't sound too fast come to think of it so who knows if cleaning actually helped or if its just happening to play normal now. Either way its working just fine for the time being.
