Playstation 1 (SCPH 1001) Mod Help - Adding Remote

Hey all, I bought a SCPH 1001 PS1 I want to use as a CD player and general tinker around on it. I'd like to make it look like this on the front with being flush. Obviously when it looks like this you can't connect a controller. However my assumption is they stuffed the dongle / IR sensor of the PS2 remote inside of it.

Does anyone know how this might be done? My thought is the IR sensor needs to be removed from it's plastic shell, then maybe directly wired to the pinout of where this ribbon cable goes?

Upon further review, if the controller plugs into these holes, then could I not check continuity between these pins and where they are soldered on, map it out, then solder the dongle into those solder holes on the back?
