Playstation hum

After reading the Stereophile rants, I just picked up an original Playstation to use as a CD player. I hooked it up and the right channel plays fine but the left channel has an audible hum and the signal is almost non exsistent. I opened it up and nothing looks irregular or out of place. Any suggestions?

Throw it away? :dunno:

I trust you did things like swap the cables, try different inputs, etc., to be sure it wasn't something like that?

Check the connectors for bad solder joints?
To add to this.Check for, better yet, reflow the solder connection on the shield/ground connection of the RCA jacks on the PS.

Yes, you need a controller. It won't auto-play - it needs to be told what to do.

Nope, you can play (and pause, skip, stop, etc.) just through the controller and your ear - no need for a monitor.
