Pleasant Suprise with a Pair of Advent AS2 Speakers

Big Jim 007

Certified Bottlehead
I stumbled upon a pair of Advent AS2's today and looked them over and noticed that they are bi-ampable and where hefty and are set up to accept floor spikes, both would indicate upper-end appointments.

They were only 100.00 buckaroo's and have their original shipping boxes that indicate a frequency range of 35-20K and the recommended amp be of 20 to 200wpc....

They are back ported with (2) 6.5: drivers and a 1" silk dome tweeter in each and are 33" tall and finished in black.

From what I can gather about them, they were around $400.00 new in 2001 which in today's market is rather inexpensive...they are made in China, but are really well built...

Okay, I hooked them up to a circa 1981 Yamaha R-2000 that is 150wpc of good old Japanese Sand and demo'd them via Steely Dan, Everything Must Go and was totally impressed....the bass was all there to my suprise and for the most part was tight and focused and never boomy.

The mids were pleasant and didn't need any eq'ing (set flat) and the highs smooth and without and harshness (again very suprising considering the price point of these baby's)....note: I have the bass/mids/trebles set flat for referencing.

I A/B'd them against my JBL L100's on the same amp and the Advents held their ground and were a bit warmer....

The soundstage of the Advents was also very big as was the depth of the imaging...which will improve even more when I do the feng shui thing and find their happy spots.

About a month or so ago, I demo'd a bunch of Paradigm's and these sound very much like the Signature S4's that were around $3000.00

Anyway, if any of you fine folks happen across a pair them and they are were as cheap as mine were (which seems to be the norm), go for them as they really are a good sounding speaker that is very affordable.

Congrats! Any pics??

I will try and get some out soon....

I love your signature, it says it all!!! The savvy audio geek can find plethora of under the money gear in the world of high-end and in a blindfold test many would be surprised what they end up choosing.

I just jumped on to research Advent AS2 speakers, and saw this post. I see a pair of these speakers in the local pawn shop on the way home from work. The price on the pair is $99. I wonder if I can haggle, and get them for cheaper. I think I will stop by again tomorrow on the way home and buy them. Thanks.

I had these speakers a while back...Very mellow sound at low volumes and they can rock at louder volumes. I liked mine alot and had to sacfrifice them to feed my family a couple years ago.

Worthy speakers IMO. Got a pic of mine some where in my sig. If i didnt erase it.

I love used. It's so-great. And in most cases the original owner had them long enough to rule out defects. I paid $30 for my British-made floorstanders, and I've never been so-happy with my sound. I find I'm hitting pawn shops and GW stores a lot more now.

Big Jim 007,

I have a pair of the advents AS2's and hope you can copy and post the specs that you had found on the side of the box for them.. I just tossed the boxes that came with mine.. But a note on the highs.. in the X over there is a 12 ohm resistor in parallel to the tweeter that holds the power down about 2.5 db to the tweeter.. That said if you unsolder one end of that resistor you will open it up and it sounds much better and more in balance..There is only 2 resistors in the x over the other one is a 1 ohm, you leave that one alown.. George

Advent AS2

First time I have seen or heard of these ? I really like the older vintage Advents. I have a pair of Prodigy's, Prodigy towers, Legacy's and a pair of Maestro's. Not sure if the Maestro's were actually produced by Advent or not.All I know is that they sound very good, are pretty heavy and can take all the power you can give them. There is someone selling a pair of the AS2's in my area for $150.00............. a little to high I think, but a real nice looking speaker.

$150 is not bad at all! They are well worth the money and more.. They are open and have a great image bottom end is well rounded.. If you like them don't overthink it get them.. I lost many a good deal that way and have kicked myself may times.. No more! I learned to get what I want with in reason.. Oh I still have mine.. Good luck! George

Yes a thread from the grave, but why start a new one on a speaker no one else will bring up ever again??

Just found ONE of these in GoodWill, and almost passed it up.
But the $9.99 price got me. I grabbed the small tower, half expecting them to either not work, or have all kinda issues or what have you.

Got home, and hooked them up, and WOW, possibly the first speaker I have heard in years that just flat out sounded TOTALLY neutral.
No boomy bass, no boosted treble, no peaks in the mids, nothing wrong at all with the sound!
The bass was very tight, and sounded for most intents like a far more expensive high quality speaker.

The tweeter was an older Vifa, and the woofers, looked to be fairly budged stamped frame stuff, but with a very good crossover.
A good component count on the board, 8 I believe.

I played song after song, and they did not let down. Just a Very clean neutral sound that nothing called attention to itself, not did I feel like anything was missing.

Maybe good to lower 40s bass wise, and just about nearly perfect midrange and smooth sound.

Old post yes, but here I go........I have two pair of AS2 that appear to be in great shape, each pair bought separately ($80 ea. pr. ironically) from mature non smoking listeners. I plan to run them with my Technics SA-5560 when my Garrard tt gets back home on Saturday.

Haven't had a system set up in 30+ years, so I'm tip toeing back in. Can I run all 4 speakers up front on main and remote outputs ? Are both pairs of outputs equally powered ?

Can't wait to finally spin some vinyl.

It appears the Technics is rated for 4 ohm speakers, most likely if running 2 pair 8 ohm per speaker is probably recommended. Check by the speaker terminals on the back of the Technics for speaker ohm info. If the Advents are 8 ohm speakers you should be fine as long as the receiver and speakers are working as they should.

I guess that I could have looked at this.. .......but I was really looking for opinions on any reason not to set it up this way.

Yesterday's project with the AS-2's........

I would say the Advent we own are for sure 4 ohm speakers, no matter what the specs say. The woofers are run in parallel and are about 8 ohms each, equating to obviously around 4 ohms over their range.
The tweeter is a 6 ohm unit.

I ran impedance sweeps, but quite a while back, and remember they were not unusually low, but I think a good portion of the low end was in the 4-6 ohm range overall.

So running 2 pair such as your set up would result in some low impedances for sure, in the range of about 2-3 ohms over some of the bass range.

I would be careful about how loud I run it etc.

Nice work stacking them. I have found they sound a bit clearer and open without the grills in place.
