please help me find speakers

Hi everyone, I was wondering if it would be possible to ask what you guys think about a choice of speakers for the current set up of equipment I have. Here are the pieces I already own.

Sony STR - 6120 Receiver

Sony PS - LX3 Turntable

Harman/Kardon EQ8 Equalizer

Harman/Kardon TU915 Tuner

Harman/Kardon CD491 Tapedeck.


Are there speakers you could recommend me trying to find? or any other equipment that would supplement this set? I would like to listen to music loud. I will be playing punk and heavier music alot, but all over the board really. Preferably vintage solid state, but whatever sounds good. I'm looking to spend not much more than $200.

EPI or Genesis, would probably work well, they are fairly plentiful & not too expensive, but would probably need re foam & recap. Try Barter Town here, you have to join to access it, but it's more than worth it.
 
With an early-solid-state Sony like that, you'll do well with speakers that like some warmth, and since tube-era models are out (because they usually aren't rated for more than 30-40 watts), I would say look for something like KLH (Epi and Genesis too). KLH models are known for being balanced, yet musical, with good bass-response. The KLH 5 would be a good start. Just a great all-around vintage speaker (I believe they're rated for 70wpc @ 8ohms).

My first opinion Advent Loudspeakers - can be had for that price but may need a refoam. Do a search here and you will find a boatload of information on how to do it. You should also put where you are loacated....karma happens.

you could build your own speakers! plenty of us here would lend you our ''sage advice'' and encouragement! [of course that would only further infect you with our common disease-AUDIONERVOSA-bwaaaahahaha!]
 
I'd say ADS L710's if you can find them.

Also, consider finding a nice 2 channel amplifier and take the strain of powering speakers off of your STR.
 
Welcome to this forum and to this exciting hobby!

For the speakers, you can hunt for them on ebay or the craigslist in your area (you can inspect them before buying, and save on shipping as well).

I also like these speakers:

Wharfedale Diamond 8, 9 or 10 models.
Boston Acoustics A26
Klipsch Kg series

The speakers already mentioned are very good ones as well.

If I were you, I would get something like NAD L-53, L-54, L-73. They are CD-Receivers all in one, so you only need speakers to make good music. This way, your choice of speakers will open up more, and you will end up with noticeably better sounding system.

You can get them for around $150 on ebay!

Best luck, and hang out here for more info. than just speakers - there is a lot to tweak here and there to improve the sound - if you are into that sort of thing - audio lover's stuff...
 
That receiver is rated at 75 watts, nothing to sneeze at as long as its in good shape.

Klipsch, EPI, and Advent are clear favorites, one no one has mentioned yet is Cerwin Vega, a pair or D-7s would do nicely as well Id think. ESS AMTs would be a possibility if you looked hard enough and they are killers with rock.

Thank you for starting this thread. I am in a similar position, right now my speakers are...err... fine, in that big box store cheap kind of way. I am looking at upgrading this summer (as soon as I can sneak a new piece of equipment in the house), and was wondering if the KLH 6's would work with my Onkyo TX-2500 MKII. I know the Onkyo is rated 40 WPC which seems to be what the KLH's will handle. However, there has been talk about the Onkyo being a little light on their WPC. What is your opinion, do you think I could mate the Onkyo with the 6's and not be at a huge risk for damage?
 
Well, I might be in for it now. I am currently the highest bidder (obviously subject to change this afternoon after posting this) on a pair of KLH 6's. Of course, the cabinets are in rough shape, and they are a way low serial number, so if anything is wrong they will be a chore to repair.
 
$200 will buy a lot in the used market. Check out Craigslist and you should find lots to chose from.

A set of Polk Model 10s would be a nice way to go too and they certainly will do loud rock well. So would many 10" JBL models. I sold some JBL L40s last year that would be quite nice for you.

Visaton floorstanding speakers. Amazing synergy with Sony amps and receivers. Especially their ES series. :wave:
