Please help with speaker ID in this CL ad...

Can anybody help me ID these speakers? I know they're probably not anything particularly special, but I have little kids (no money and they break everything) so I have to stay very thrifty.

That's what I think too. The 5B was Radio Shack's attempt at a KLH Model Five so they might be pretty decent.

So I called the guy, he said there's no model number... I suppose that's reasonable enough, I see lots of good thrift speakers with no ID at all on them.

I asked if all the drivers work since I'm hoping to meet him half way. He said they didn't when he got them but he replaced the the non-functional tweeters since then. Of course now I'm dubious as to weather they're proper replacements... He said they were the proper replacements, but do you guys know how to tell? I guess that'll depend on the final ID.

Anyhow, he said they both have 2 "tweeters" and one "subwoofer". So, three drivers? Does that help with the ID?

I'm gonna see if he'll send me a photo of the front w/o the grill and a photo of the back.

The two tweeters and one woofer smacks of the Radio Shack Optimus speaker. A pic of the drivers will determine whether it is or isn't.

If they have only three drivers they're not 5Bs. The 5B, like the KLH Model Five, has four drivers, a woofer, tweeter and two mids. They should be marked. Radio Shack speakers have the model number printed on the terminal plate. The 5B, for instance, has "OPTIMUS-5B" printed on the upper left of the terminal plate. I suspect the seller hasn't looked all that hard for the model number or just doesn't understand what he's seeing.

The replaced tweeters are a potential problem. We don't really know whether the replacements are appropriate so an audition would be advisable unless you just want to take a $25.00 flier.

So I finally met up with this guy. They're 1Bs. They're in OK shape but need sanding and finish. The woofers are great, if the originals had rubber surrounds. The mid tweet on both were pushed in and the top wasn't OEM (though it might've been a direct replacement).

I actually did the deal after talking him down to approximately the price of a plate of nachos. But on the way home, after two blocks my car smelled like an ash tray. He was kind enough to unwind the deal.

Anyway, mystery solved.
