Plexiglas glue?

SaSi

Seriously Illogical
I am trying to find the correct glue to glue together pieces of 5mm thick plexi. Tried superglue (cyanoacrylic) and PVC tubing glue following suggestions but these don't work.

PVC glue didn't stick well at all.

Cuanoacrylic apparently glued perfectly and immediately but it didn't last more than one week on the test pieces I tried. At first it seems to hold well but after a few days the contact became brittle (for lack of a better word) and upon moderate force applied the two pieces came apart easily.

The panels I am planning to glue are about 10 x 60 cm and the end result should be a 10x10x60 "vase" with a flat bottom and watertight seams.

The solvent stuff is the way to go. I have a bottle of Warp's brand that I bought years ago but don't know where you'd get that now. Parts must fit together w/o gaps though.

When I was in graduate school the shop in our department used methylene chloride to build Plexiglass apparatus for polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (basically we're talking about a Plexiglass box). It works almost instantly, bonds water-tight (the box was filled with water-based buffers for use) and does not "craze" the Plexiglass.

I don't think methylene chloride is all that readily available anymore, though.

For small jobs, Plastic Surgery (awsome stuff) and for large jobs Weld-On:

Be advised that that very solvent glue shown above will disappear all on it's own out of a closed can.

I've had two can that I used a tiny amount out of disappear over a year or two. So you need to find a way to extra seal the can. Cause the stuff evporates right past the carboard seal in the cap.

Weld-On is also sensitive to shelf life (starts changing chemically) but it's good stuff.

As mentioned above, methylene chloride is the solvent most acrylic (plexiglass) fabricators use to "weld" acrylic pieces together.

Thanks for the answers guys. I understand I need to look for ethylene chloride based glue. Unfortunately I can't find the exact brands you mentioned localy (and can't order them - shipping hazzard).

Now, what about that acetone being mentioned?

Still no luck in finding a proper glue localy. Tried hardware stores, nothing. Tried chemical stores (even went to a BASF outlet) nothing. Directed me to marine tools and equipment; nothing. Tried aquarium stores; nothing.

Still searching.

Wouldn't cost much to get done perfectly at a plastics forming shop.
If you have the material already, the labour cost they will charge, will probably be cheaper than the time, and expense of hunting down, and purchasing a small amount of the correct adhesive IMHO....

Sorry just realized you are in Greece, and you guys make everything out of marble......so clearly you are in a hurry.:)

I finally had some luck in the quest for commrecial solvent adhesives that are available here.

Found Acrifix 190 that is available localy. The importer is selling a carton of 5x1lt cans at 35 euro per can. Waiting for the address of an outlet nearby where I can buy retail.
