PLUG-IN VS DIRECT SOLDER CONNECTIONS

I picked up a B&K ST-1400/II power amp at a GW for $40. A score, in very good shape, 125W into 8 ohms, 165W into 4 ohms, good quality parts. Works fine, has a very good basic sound— but not great. I’d describe it as warm, musical, and “mushy” — smoothed off like a very old tube amp: lack of detail, no transient snap, slow to respond.

Looking inside, I see that all the sections (many separate PCBs) are connected by push-on plugs. Lots of them, plugs at both ends of the connective wiring. It makes for quick assembly, thus a lower selling price. But I’m convinced it compromises SQ, and replacing those plugs with hard-soldered direct connections would yield a noticeable improvement.

A friend said Caig Gold would achieve the same results — I’ve used it, and other ‘contact enhancers’ in the past and hardly noticed a difference. I used it on the cartridge pins of a LOMC, and all other connections in the Phono chain, thinking the benefits would be most noticeable with that ultra-low level signal, but I heard little change. Maybe my ears are to blame for that.

Cutting off all the plugs and soldering all the wires would be a lot of work — but who knows, it has good power output and a pleasing basic sound — the amp might go from good to great, if the missing speed and detail could be restored. It also has two switches, also on plug-in boards, one for switching from RCA to balanced inputs, the other for integrating into a Home Theater system, neither of which I need — I could bypass them as well to improve the signal paths.

Do you guys think it would be worth the effort? Do you think a contact-enhancer would help (there are at least 50–60 metal-to-metal pin-contacts so it could have a cumulative effect). Finally, do any of you have experience with the “enhanced” enhancers which suspend grains of silver between the contact surfaces? (Walker, of super-expensive turntable fame, makes one, but it’s $200, very expensive if it doesn’t help).

I've always thought there was something in the audio grease. Contact enhancers sound like a certain kind of oil. Anyways, ebay says at $200-300 sold, you are in the money and can experiment with silver enhancer. OTOH, I've always thought if an amp didn't make a good first impression, tweaking will not yield wholesale improvement. The amp has to show some potential to begin with before you start spending. I would say cash out your nice score and build up your audio dollars for something that better fits your preference.
 
I'd just unplug and plug in the connections a few times, to help clean off any oxidisation.
Beyond that I'm with Socal Sam - I'd only bother doing more if you think it sounds good in the first place.

I would be surprised if simply soldering plug-in connections fixed a mushy and slow sounding amp. A recap might help, but from your description I'd move it on and get something else. In my experience, amps with "restoration to greatness potential" sound very good before it too.

Don't know how you think it makes things any quicker to assemble?
Someone had to assemble those harnesses

They make for a higher parts count, more labor intensive to build, more costly to build amplifier, but with the payoff of an easier to service (modular) one

The computer you just composed your post with is put together in a similar way
Have you treated all the edge plugs in your PC with "contact enhancer" to restore it's "missing speed and detail"?

The sound quality issue is all in your head

Treat metal to metal connections with D5 if you're angsting and then leave them alone
Some high quality plug and socket connections can outlast solder connections, without touch up or maintenance, in some apps

The B&K is a rock solid amp, but it is also 20 years old now. May be time to have it put on a good bench and tuned up by someone who knows what they are doing
 
The OP introduced Walker SST contact enhancer which is a product I am not aware of. Did a google and image search. Not that I am susceptible to this but it is fascinating a product like this can exist in audio. I have my doubts about introducing conductive paste which has the potential to migrate and cause shorts elsewhere.

Those silver "enhanced" greases for audio and video have been separating folks from their money for ages, at least since the 1990s

At least a dozen of those (using metal "enhancements") along with the others, my favorite of which is Furutech's "Nano Liquid" with Squalene

Reviewers kind of toned it down on the metal content products after more than a few incidences of a little too much "enhancement" due to overly enthusiastic applications of some of these materials

There is certainly a place in electronics for conductive pastes and greases (thinks ICs and heat sinks), of that there is no doubt, but this isn't one of them

Yeah, another finge product for the hyper fanatical.
 
bimasta, you do know your Tandberg 3002 is assembled using computer type edge plugs on every board in it?
Maybe the new power amp is just highlighting the rest of your system's short comings?
What was your power amp before this B&K showed up?
 
I wasn't clear, Collin: the B&K power amp is not a new acquisition. I got it about 5 years ago. Frankly I don't recall my exact system at the time, but I know none of my Tandberg gear was part of it. Like many here on AK, I have several components "warming the bench" at any given time, which go into the rotation when I get something new and want to check the synergies, or just get bored. My system at any given time has shortcomings, of course, but low resolution is not one of them: it's highly detailed. That's why the B&K's 'softness' was so immediately apparent. I gave it a week or so to see if its character changed but it didn't, and I stopped using it. That's when I began to ponder possible improvements via the methods I raised in my opening post. There was no rush so I didn't seek AK's advice until now — I was looking at it, idle on the shelf, and again wondered if it had hidden potential that could be released.

As is, the B&K is just 'soft'. It has many positive attributes, and people with different tastes might find it ideal. But for me it always leaves something missing from the music I know best.

BTW, kudos for knowing I have the Tandberg system. You did some homework!
