I've a PM7200, which is 15 years old and well used, it runs hot so which doesn't help interms of aging components, so I figured I'd share my experiences to help anyone modding theirs.
So I started off cleaning out years of dust that accumulated in the heatsinks.
I decided to upgrade all the dielectric caps to new caps, I upgraded all signal path elna's to elna silmic II's.
I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade dc line decoupling caps to nichicon PW's and high temp panasonics caps since this amp runs hot....., I figured all these were doing was making sure no ac ripple/noise reached the amplifying circuitry so I ignored the fact that the original caps there were all elnas (infact almost every single dielectric cap in this amp is an elna ! ).
Ooops, seriously bad idea !!, the sound was completely closed, almost muffled, and didn't improve with been run for a few days. So I put elna silmic II's into these locations and put back in the massive original 15000uF marantz labelled psu caps, and happy days, the amp was back to its nice smooth sound after a day or so of running, these elna silmic II caps do genuinely require burn-in before sounding good. So I've put all this down as a learning experience. I had read beforehand about the silmic burn-in time but hadn't really believed it until I experienced it. .
I left the short circuit protection board using the new high temperature tolerant caps as this is awell known problem area of the amp where caps blow due to aging/heat.
After all that effort, the amps sounded similar but more open, lively with better base then it had previously.
I replaced the biasing pots with new trimmer pots, the old original ones were abit troublesome in that a tiny amount of turning had a big effect, the new pots make it easier to get good bias values,
After about 4 months, I decided to have a look at the opamps, it uses 2x NJM2114D dual opamp, one for the volume and another for the phono input, and 3x NJM2068D dual op-amps for the tone control.
I decided to replace all except the phono opamps with opa2134pa's, I used sockets so I could easily swap them out for other opamps if I wanted to.
Noise characteristics were not changed in the amp/speakers by doing this. This surprisingly made a more profound effect on the amp then changing the caps did. The amp sound more live , more musical. I had been concerned that these new j-fet opamps were different beasts compared to the original bjt opamps, I don't hear any bad effects due to this, so the opa2134's are staying in.
Since I'm in Europe, I reduced the capacitance of the audio inputs as they're higher then the US model. The higher values are supposed to help reduce electrical noise/interference, but in reality all they seem to do is affect the sound in a bad way, especially on the phono input which is wayyyy to high.
If anyone has an other opamps suggestions or other improvement mods, it would be appreciated.
