Polk Audio RTA 12 curb find

Well it's been awhile since I was on this site but I just had to relay this story. I was driving to the laundry mat early last Sunday morning when I passed some stuff sitting on the curb. As I approached I saw what looked like a pair of speakers of some size. I did a quick 180 and stopped in front of the speakers. My first impression was that they were some cheap Panasonics or AALs. Imagine my surprise when I pulled of the lower grill and realized I had here an original set of POLK RTA 12s! Of course into the truck they went and off I went. I just fired them up last night and except for one dead 6.5" driver and a blown fuse (replaced) everything works. They need a good cleaning and the grills have seen some kitty paws and dripped wax but other than that I can't complain. I'll have to search my back stock to see if I have a replacement driver and a good set of speakers stands for them. Thankfully I got to them soon enough before they sat in the snow bank too long and ruined the bottoms.

As much as I would like to see a photo of them, you know what would be cool? If all you guys that find these things curbside would take a photo of them sitting on the curbside where you found them.

Nice find. I really like the RTA 12. They sound just like the SDA 2 without the SDA effect. Which some people may prefer.

I agree that it would be cool to see pics of them at the curb, but the "curbside grab" is usually something you do quick and without drawing too much attention. Even though I know 100% something is out for the trash when I snag it, I still feel funny doing so and usually aim to get it in the car and be on the road quickly. The only exception to that rule is when there is any doubt and I feel compelled to check with the owner to make sure its ok to take.

So I'm driving to a car meet in my '59 Triumph TR3 convertible last Sunday morning, when I saw some speakers placed out on the curb; very rare in my neighborhood. The TR3 has low cut doors, so I'm able to drive right up to them and, while still behind the wheel, pop off the grills; they look OK, I'm able to pivot the speaker and see POLK RT12 on the back.

Well, if they are still there in a couple hours, I'll consider taking them home.

Couple hours later, they are still there. I'm pleasantly surprised 1 speaker can fit nicely deep in the passenger seat footwell and end at the seatback. I can pull off the tonneau cover and place the second speaker on top of the first, base against the dashboard, but manageable for the two blocks home. Not a wood veneer speaker, so no big deal.

The speakers are still parked in the garage, right next to the TR3. I haven't tested them yet, though.

Reading the original post, I thought it was a strange coincidence that the OP and I snagged the same speakers on the same day, but with a 2000 mile difference. Then I see he has RTA 12s, compared to my RT 12s.
