Polk Audio XRt12

Wow, it's been a while since I posted anything!

Anyway, all the previous posts I saw on this item, seemed to be up to maybe 20 years old. So here's a new one.

I actually picked up a couple of them, basically new-in-box with the original remotes etc, for as little as $12, at thrift stores.

And then I just put them on a shelf.

But about a year ago now, after getting tired AGAIN of all the ads on local FM radio, I decided to give it a try. (And up to about 6 years ago, I didn't have a south-facing window for the antenna.)

At that time, the new-customer offer was 3 months for $1, and then $9.99/month, for their "All Music" service. (No sports, talk shows, etc.)

At first I didn't like the sound, many of the songs were overly boom-y, compression artifacts, etc. But over time, maybe the first couple weeks, it's like the tuner "learned" how things are transmitted now, and settled down. I don't think it's just my head getting used to it, because other sources sound the same as before.

I don't get the large number of channels that are available with Sirius, because the Polk was intended to be XM-only. But I found instructions on how to "re-scan channels" and now I at least get several that apparently stayed on XM "frequencies." Enough to keep me from going back to local FM, for sure. And it's quite possible I wouldn't be able to get all the sports/talk stuff anyway, with an XM tuner, even if I paid for them.

Mostly I'm on "80s on 8" these days, in the past I've spend some time on "70s on 7" and "90s on 9" but for the "90s" channel especially I'm put off by their occasionally playing an hour or more of rap-crap.

I've actually been mentioned on-air a few times, by the "DJs," when I email them with something.

A "danger" for me is that, without the ads to cause annoyance, time passes quickly and soon it's 3am! And I should be in bed!

I take mine out of storage every two or three years, hook it up, play with it a while and then go back to streaming S/XM when I'm home. Steaming is far from perfect, but it sounds much better to my ear than the Polk. I wrote a review here in 2012 that concluded the Polk is a good machine if you can't get decent internet service. I think that's still true. That said, I'm (mildly) a fan of S/XM: it strikes me as being closer to the spirit of radio than any of the on-demand services, no matter how good their playlists are.
