polk monitor 10 question....

I picked up a pair of polk audio monitor 10 the other day, the were made in 1986with the sl 2500 tweeter, both tweeters were blown but all else is in excellent shape. i pulled the peerless tweeters from my monitor 4s and put them in and they sound great. My question, is their any harm in replacing the blown sl2500 with the silk dome peerless? they seem kinda power hungry is this typical of the monitor 10? thanks in advance chad

I think it will be fine. The crossover may be different for the SL-2500 vs. the Peerless. The schematics for the crossovers can be found on the Club Polk forums. I had a pair of 10's with Peerless tweeters and they didn't seem power hungry. I think the 10's have an efficiency of 90 to 91 dB.

92 dB to be exact. Fairly efficient speakers, not know to be power hungry.

how do i know that the peerless tweeter is wired correctly in the monitor 10?there is nothing on the tweeter to indicate positive or negative.

The Peerless I've got sitting here has little insulating fiber washers at the base of the terminals, one red, one black. I would assume the red is pos. I believe the black wire is the pos. lead.

I can't advise you on the tweeter swap, but I do suspect the 10s need a lot of power to sound good. I've heard three pairs at 55wpc, 90wpc, and 250wpc. Only the 250wpc sounded any good to me, but I fully admit it could have been other room/gear differences that made the real difference. All the setups involved were decent, though.

The Monitor 10's sound better with more power. Mine sound much better with my CR2040 (120W/channel) than they do with my CR1040 (80w/channel) . But they really sing driven by my Acurus A200 (200w/channel) with a tighter bottom end, a more precise midrange/top end, and wider deeper sound stage. polk sells replacement tweeters via their website.

Jim

i say that they seem power hungry because im running them with a pioneer sx 780, they scream to be turned up...
