Polk Monitor 7 Tweeters

MWalt

Super Member
My Polk Monitor 7's have the SL-2000 tweeters. I have been looking for some peerless tweets as a replacement. If the dome is black in color and If the wires go down to the lower corners are they peerless tweeters?? Do they have to have a small hole in the center? It can be hard to identify the little holes in some pictures. Are they direct bolt ins as replacements for the SL-2000?

There are good photos of all of the Polk 5/7/10 tweeters in a thread at the polk forums www.polkaudio.com/forums You may need to register (if you're not registered already) to see all of them.

in the meantime this link may be helpful. I'll add more if I find some...

Your best bet is to get the Polk uprated Replacement, RD0194-1 tweeter.
(there designed for replacing the SL-2000, no xover mods or anything)

They are a drop in, come brand new from Polk, and the Peerless is not drop
in to where they are slightly differently shaped and the xover is different, a
new pair of the Polk upgrades are what I did on my 10's, NO LOOKING BACK!

What kegger said, the Peerless is larger overall than the SL-2000. I did the same thing with my 10Bs, great improvement.

Yep Merrylander has it, the new tweeter is definatly a nice improvement..:)
(Took all of about 10 minutes total to install both as well)

I would recommend continue looking for some peerless. I tried the polk replacements for months and they were dull and lifeless and I lost about 50% of the clarity, detail and soundstage that I have with the sl2000 tweeter. I'm using a total of 20 sl2000 tweeters in my 4 pair of polk sda speakers and prefer them over any of the tweeters polk used including the vifa tweeter. The sl2000 tweeter is a perfect match for tube lovers who listen to smooth jazz and vocals.

With no disrespect for cornhulio,

I could not disagree more, I build an use tube equipment as well, an for me the SL-2000
made me not even want the 10B's I have, after there new tweeters the top end is really
an enjoyable listen with better clarity and resolution to boot. No drawbacks here. :)

I don't find the SL-2000 smooth at the top end nor do I get the sense of openess/space
that the new tweeter provides in spades..

If those Peerless were a drop in both in terms of size and xover I would use them as well
over the SL-2000 tweeter in a heartbeat.

The sl2000 may not be for everyone but neither are the polk replacements. The peerless might be just right for anyone that likes neither of them. I use vintage telefunkens which really highlight the smoothness and airyness of the sl2000's top end.

A good way of comparing tweeters is a side by side comparison with tweeter A in the left speaker and tweeter B in the right speaker. Walking back and forth and listening shortly to each one individually can really isolate and identify the differences between the two tweeters.

All fine and good, just be aware that if you opt for the Peerless (and I have them in my 7Bs and 5As and do think they are great) you better have a good router and know how to use it. You might even be able to fit them in manually with some really sharp chisels. Like kegger I have absolutely no complaints with the drop in replacements.

All good advice.

I will opt for the drop-ins if I do go that route. My current SL-2000's sound good to my ears in conjunction with my tube amp. I just had read so much on the AK that the "peerless" tweeters were so much better that I thought I could give em a shot. I am always looking for ways to tweak and improve!

Other than the Peerless tweeters being the wrong size, their crossovers are slightly different. The RD0-194's are just as smooth.
