I have a chance to bid on what looks like a nice pair of Polk Model SRS 31TL's at a local auction. To be honest I'm thinking about flipping them so I can afford to get a pair of upper level JBL's. Can anyone tell me what these go for and what would be a solid bid factoring in the risk that I haven't heard them? Also, if I did win them, what would be a good JBL model for a no cash trade?

Thought I had an audio super find weekend..... but alas, no. Here's the quick skinny:
- I won the auction for the Polk SRS 3.1 tl's for $100.00. Lugged the suckers home, hooked them up, but alas... , the tweets are out on them.
- Sat., before I won the Polks, I was out picking some garage sales and I see a guy walking down the street with a reel to reel. I asked , he sold, for
$5 a TEAC 3300. But alas..... the heads are worn thin and the rear break doesn't work
- before I left, I asked him if he has any more equipment and he said he had a Kenwood 9600 he'd part with, but it needs a little work on the pre amps. For $10.00 I took it home, fired it up, but alas.... the pre amps need replacing along with other major work.
I guess my newbie stupid questions for you guys are as follows:
1. On the Polks, I've unhook and tested the tweets directly and they aren't working. Is there any way to test the leads going to the tweets to make sure theres not a crossover problem as well? Also, alas, it didn't come with the interconnect cable (pin/blade) so there's another expense.
2. On the Kenwood 9600, is it worth getting the pre amps replaced. Cosmetically it's near perfect with great faceplate and all, and the tuner works really well.
3. On the TEAC, is there somewhere to get new record/play head and erase for a reasonable price.
I guess the lesson for the weekend is, truely good equipment at dirt cheap prices isn't easy to come by. But heck, maybe I can invest in these pieces and get a decent sound out of them, or worse case, part them out and get my $115.00 out of them. Thanks for letting me whine bitch and complain.

You got those Polks for a STEAL. You'd be goofy to let them go. You can upgrade the tweeters pretty cheap directly from Polk Audio. I'm not sure that they can accept the RDO-194 tweeter, but if they can, I believe a pair will cost you about $100, which is a very worthy upgrade. World class speakers dude.
A steal for $100 despite the tweeters. Definitely get the new tweeters from Polk directly, they are drop in, should only be ~$100 for the pair as mentioned above. Join the Polk Audio forum, then tell them you are a member when you order and they give you free shipping.
Its probably worth pulling the xover out and checking them. If the speakers were over powered enough to kill the tweeters, they may have damaged something in the xover.

As far as the interconnect cable, I'm pretty sure that only the pin is active in the circuit (the blade is just grounded) therefore, you can use a single wire to connect between the pins. I think the pin size is close to that of the center pin in an RCA. Some people just strip off the grounding portion of the RCA and use the pins to connect.
You should be able to have a great sounding set of speakers for not much more than $200.

BTW, that Kenwood is worth a small fortune just in parts. For $10 it was a steal as well. Not sure what you mean by preamps need replacing. Are you talking about the amplifier power packs or something else? Regardless, you probably need to get it to a vintage stereo repair expert. Check in the Kenwood-Trio subforum.
